I have a lot of movies with 6.1 and 7.1 channel audio in AAC format.
These are always transcoded to eAC3 6.1 and 7.1 on my Roku Ultra. The reason for transcoding in Plex playback feedback says “max of 6 channels exceeded for codec AAC”.
Should I be ripping all my 7 channel audio Blu-ray movies to eAC3 instead of AAC for best compatibility in Plex? What would be a comparable eAC3 bitrate?
E-AC-3 should be used for multi-channel audio. On Roku TV and Roku Ultra devices, it can be decoded; for other devices it can be passed through to the receiver (as can DTS):
To double down on what @pshanew says - there aren’t any (?) playbars or audio receivers that support multichannel AAC, so if your source files are AAC, something in the playback chain must convert the audio.
When encoding, many people preserve the original EAC3 as “Passthru”. I haven’t looked into it recently, but in the past there were challenges re-encoding EAC3 7.1.
