Currently I have Plex server setup on my Main Everyday computer. I originally did this because it was the only thing available to me at the time, and it was more than capable of Transcoding from 4k to 1080p as I didn’t have a 4k TV yet and I had more than enough room for Hard Drives.
I was able to acquire 2 separate Servers (one an actual Rack mounted server and the other an older gaming system) and have them set up with Unraid. 1 is for Movies and the other is for TV.
For obvious reasons I would also like to remove Plex server from my main computer to the older gaming machine. However I am not sure the best configuration. Unraid supports the Plex server docker but will that work well when there is a 2nd NAS that it needs to hook up to? THe alternative, and I think the solution that I am leaning towards is setting up a VM with Windows or Linux to run the plex server (and other related applications).
Just wondering if that is the best way, or possibly a 3rd option.
Full CPU model in each server (include any K/F/etc that might indicate presence/absence of GPU, low/high power, etc)?
Any Nvidia/AMD GPUs? If so, model?
How much RAM on each server?
Streaming requirements?
How many concurrent local streams?
How many concurrent remote streams?
Do you need to transcode/tonemap 4K HDR to SDR?
I am not questioning if my servers can handle the Plex server. I know that the one I am planing on moving it to can. I also know that it can support a VM. I was interested in more of a “Best Practice” on if people are saying install the Docker, or create a VM. I don’t know how easy it is in Unraid to connect another Unraid NAS as networked storage, or would just setting up a Windows VM a more straight forward thing as far as networking goes.
THe server in Question has 32GB DDR3 RAM, an nvidia GPU, probably 5 or 7 years old, and an 8 Core 3.44 Ghz AMD Processor. I do allow other to stream both Locally and Remotely but I have no interest in designing the system to make that easier for them, this is mainly for me to stream locally and as I stated I do have my 4k TV and unless their is some funky format that I have that a shield can’t play, Transcoding will not be an issue.
