Going to Plex but some questions first

As an introductory, I started with XBMC on the original XBox, but want to get moved over to Plex. I already have an UnRaid server up and running which the current XBMC’s attach to. I initially used the Xbox but eventually moved to the appleTV 2’s being jailbroke. I have already ripped my 1000+ DVD’s to iso format. I understand that Plex can’t handle iso so will have to convert, I also understand the 2 part system of Plex being I need the Plex Server and then the Plex Client which for me will be new AppleTV 4K in the home theater. So here are my questions…

First, should I install the Plex Server on the UnRaid or should I get a separate PC? Is there a performance hit either way? I know if a separate PC, it will be running all the time, which is why I’m thinking since the drive server is already running and bought, why not use it

Second, I know there are iso to mp4 converters, but should I convert or just rip all the DVD’s again?

I’m sure I’ll have other questions in time. Thanks for input in advance.

I run my Plex in a docker container on Unraid and have had no issues. The Plex clients on TV are limited due to TV hardware so you will need to check your TV Specs to see if it will meet your needs but if you want something that will Play anything you throw at it then you will want to get an Nvidia Shield Pro especially if you want HD audio such as Dolby Atmos.

I riped all my movies to MKV using Make MKV. For 4K movies I also created 1080p optimized versions for my non 4K TVs so they are not transcoded.

Can you point me to what to read. I currently am running unraid 5.0.8 but am probably going to do the upgrade to 6 as soon as I find to docs as the link is broken.

I cannot comment on the Unraid system in particular or the platform in general. From general experience I can tell you can easily start running it on your existing platform (I suppose that’s where you#re hosting your media anyway). If it turns out to be not powerful enough you can always add a separate dedicated server.

You can use MakeMKV to get to the individual videos inside your ISO. No need to re-rip them from scratch.

I think you need ver 6 to get the docker and vms but not sure. I am currently getting ready to upgrade to ver 6.9 myself and it is not hard to do.

Space Invader One has a bunch of tutorials you might be interested in including how to update. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZDfnUn74N0WeAPvMqTOrtA

Thanks guys. Got my reading to do. Can’t wait to get moved from the old original Xbox XBMC to Plex. The old was great for its time, but looking forward to all the new stuff and appearance.
