What is the better setup...PMS on synology or on mac mini?

All of my media sits on a synology NAS that is connected to my network. I also have a late 2011 mac mini. So what would be the better setup:

  1. Have the PMS running on the mac mini with the media library pointed to the synology
  2. Have the entire PMS running on the synology NAS

    Is there are pros or cons to either setup? My media is a mix of mpeg/avi/mkv.

I assume you have already checked to make sure your Synology is compatible? Its an Intel processor based DS?

Hi,

Without knowing a lot of detail, I would say the mini. Reason being, unless you have a very high end synology model the processor in the mini would be faster which would enable better transcoding to your clients.

I can give you a few more definite options, if you want to provide some more details like;
- What model Synology NAS is it?
- What clients do you plan to watch your media on? (iPhone, Roku, on the Mac Mini etc)
- What sort of media fo you plan to watch (SD/720p/1080p/Full Bit Rate 1080p/etc)

Playing around I determined that my nas isn’t compatible so it isn’t an issue. It looks like my mini will stay as my plex server and will point to the nas for all the media. I have no issues with that.

I’ve got both platform’s available- ds1512+ or a core2duo mac mini.

client platforms will be iphone, ipad 2, windows 7, and various mac laptops.

content goes from SD digitized VHS to 1080p mp4’s with 6 channel aac sound.

Plex is now available for the DS1512+, see here:

it should be an easy install if it's an "official" app.

My DS1512+ is on its way as we speak ;)
