What is the difference between adding a friend or creating a home user for that friend?

I have these ¼ million images of our family and I would like to share them with my brothers and sisters. What is the best way to do this in order to get them on my system and protecting them and me?

You can share with any friend.

Inviting to Home is for people you actually live with in your home. It has the fast user switching in app. It can be managed users or regular accounts. Managed users are mostly for kids you live with that you want to control which devices they use. As someone with a real account needs to sign into that device first then switch to the managed account.

If you invite accounts or create managed users to your home make sure to add an account pin. which should be part of the process when you add someone. this is so folks like your children at home cannot switch to your account.

In any case IMO you should have them create their own free Plex accounts then add those accounts as friends. You can share whichever of your libraries you want them. If one of them moves in with you one day you can always add them to your home later.

Okay, so for brothers and sisters, I would like them to have their own login, but I don’t want them to be able switch to any other login. Wouldn’t best method be to invite them as a friend? It says when I add friend that I can either their Plex Username or email. If put in their personal email address, then they don’t have to sign up with Plex even though it is free. Right? And then they can’t switch to anyone else.

Also, if they accept the invitation, can they create a pin for themselves?

yes that is what I said.

They need an account. Accounts have a username or email. If they don’t have an account yet then to add a friend then you need to use email. They will be prompted when accepting the friend request to create an account

Okay, this is complicated. I added a friend to the my Plex. The friend is my Google email address. It took me to Plex where it wanted a verification code and I can’t find where that is. I didn’t get any verification code anywhere and it said to use my google authenticator, but I don’t have anything in it for Google. I totally afraid that this is just what will turn my brothers and sisters off if they can’t accept this invitation without killing themselves trying to get through of these hops.

I finally was able to get this user address sharing my family folders, but this really seems like a huge amount of extra work just to view some images.

If I invite them as home user, then they wouldn’t have to go through all of that stuff and if I create pins for each of them then they would not be able to switch users. Right?

Can we set a pin that is large then 4 numbers? Can I use Alpha in it?

Why are you trying to invite yourself? If you are already signed into your regular account then try to create another in same browser then browser cache will get confused about who is signed in.

Have them go to app.plex.tv and tell them to create an account. then after they do that, you add the friend with the email or username they used for the account.

I wanted to see how hard it would be for the to do all of this. I think that your suggestion of signing up first for the plex account first would be the best. Then invite them. Then ask the for their Plex username or the email associated with the account. Right?

once connected, I am assuming that they cannot switch home users. Right?

correct

as long as you only use the Add Friend method then they will not be a home user
