What is the new 'PlexMediaServer' share for DSM 7?

I’ve noticed there’s a new update to PMS (version 1.24.2.4973) and the release notes say this is new:

“(Synology) Use new ‘PlexMediaServer’ share as metadata storage structure on DSM 7”

I’m still running DSM 6 and was thinking to update to DSM 7, but am not clear what the above means. All I’ve read so far seems to point to the Plex share being removed with DSM 7, but the above seems to indicate the PMS is back to supporting a share?

So for those of us who haven’t yet upgraded to DSM 7, does this mean the update steps will be different? If so, what’s changed?

Thanks for that. I had read through that and a few other posts explaining the process, but none of them have been updated to reference the new folder (unless I’ve missed something). As you say, the instructions stress following things exactly, so the instructions being out-of-date with regards to that folder makes me hesitate with the upgrade to DSM 7.

I think I’ll wait for a few more Plex DSM 7 updates before I upgrade to DSM 7, as things still seem a bit in flux… But for those who are more adventurous:

Is the only difference that a fresh install will now automatically create this new visible share?

For those who had already gone through the upgrade and have the hidden share, will this and future updates (should this be skipped) now automatically migrate the plex library/config to this new visible folder?

I’m sorry, but saying the instructions aren’t out-of-date followed by pointing out something that’s changed doesn’t help your argument.

Take a deep breath. I’m not critising anyone. If you can’t see how the current instructions can cause confusion based on the current release notes, then good for you. But the current update mentions a new share – something that differs from the instructions. And it uses the word ‘use’, rather than ‘uses’, which implies an action for the end user. I simply came here seeking some clarification, because the instructions are quite specific to follow them exactly, yet the last I checked still refer to PMS now using a hidden share and don’t mention this new visible share. Your initial reply simply pointed me to the same instructions that aren’t completely current.

Thanks for pointing to the PMS 1.23.2.4973 post. That clarifies my two questions and it’s ashame it wasn’t pinned. Hopefully it can be pinned or the pinned install instructions be updated to reflect the current situation with the folder.
