I am trying to figure out what the benefits of the Plex pass is.

In short:

  • It unlocks hardware accelerated transcoding and tone mapping (on certain hardware)
  • It unlocks all the advanced features of the Plex player, like rewind-on-pause
  • It unlocks all the advanced features of the Plexamp music player client, like artist mixes
  • It unlocks advanced music features on the server, like Sonic Analysis
  • It lets you bypass the one-time $5 fee to unlock the Android and iOS apps

If all you do is Direct Play media (no transcoding or tone mapping needed), don’t care about player features like skipping credits, and don’t care about music, you may never feel the need for Plex Pass.

It allows you to use a DVR. If not that, then at LEAST it allows you to receive free guide data automatically.
