What should we do to make Plex respect music tags and ignore folder structure?

Everywhere in the world, music management is built around tags. Artist, album, year, track number, genre - these are universal standards that every player, library system, or DJ software relies on.

I understand Plex was originally designed with movies in mind, where folder structure plays a huge role. But with music, things are different. Folders don’t describe an album — they’re just personal “playlists” or storage preferences of the user. Two people might organize the same album in completely different ways, and neither reflects the actual metadata of the music itself.

The problem is that Plex still tries to look at folder structure when organizing music, which often creates a mess for anyone who has a large or carefully tagged collection. For music libraries, the only reliable source of truth is embedded tags.

So the question is: what can we do as a community (or what should Plex do as a product) to make music libraries fully tag-driven and completely independent of how files are stored in folders?

Would love to hear your thoughts.
