I’m currently looking into buying a Plex Pass especially because of the added Gravenote support.
However, I still would like to know what the actual playback experience looks like? When you select a song on a Plex player (say a FireTV, Samsung Smarthub or Xbox One) and just let it play, do you get some kind of visualization displayed on the screen? Maybe something like changing artist pictures in the background that act like a screensaver?

Nope.

Nope. Not changing. You’ll get better Artist pictures and wallpapers, but these are static.

I can’t speak to the devices you mentioned, but the Plex app for Roku does show album covers for the currently-playing track as a screensaver after a few minutes. There is no difference in the playback experience itself between the free and Plex Pass levels.
With Plex Pass, you can display lyrics for the currently-playing song. With Gracenote, you’ll get different Artist pics and wallpaper. “Better” is up to you.
If it helps, I wrote up my thoughts on the differences between Basic and Premium music libraries some time back.
