What's the status of Dolby Vision + Atmos on Plex? (re: LG WebOS, Nvidia Shield, Apple TV)

Well, not true for shield.
Sadly there is more issues other then DoVi triggering.
Most notorious is “red push”

  • Yes I tried changing audio tracks.
  • Tried both, Resolution switching On/Off
  • Could not find option to enable frame rate switching in shield (doubt its there)
  • Shield is set to auto switch rec 709/2020.

Info on Plex player shows direct play while playing movie.

The adjust frame rate option is next to the adjust resolution option, in plex app advanced settings.

In the shield settings, display, you can set the available/default display modes.

My bad I did not explain properly:
I’ve turned on “Refresh Rate Switching” in Plex advanced settings.
Though I don’t see a resolution setting in Plex advanced setting.
I’ve trying playing with the video quality settings in Plex settings

I’ve also played quite a lot with the display resolution settings in shield. Currently using 4K 23.976Hz Dolby Vision and HDR10 mode. In the custom display mode though it shows “3840x2160 23.976Hz YUV 422 12-bit Rec 2020 Dolby Vision and HDR 10 Ready”

They funny thing is that my friend who has a shield too is trying to help me. Each and every DV title plays for him successfully on shield. He has a marantz receiver while I have a denon 4400. He has a LG CX OLED while I have the older C8. We both have gone through our settings side by side and still can’t figure out why he can play all titles in DV while I can’t play any.

I opted in for the WebOS beta Plex app, via the Plex app on the LG, and that’s honestly all I did. It played my Dolby Vision .MKV files without any issues.

Note that my files use Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos for audio. If your files have Dolby TrueHD audio, playback will fail because the LG doesn’t support it. Change the audio to AC-3, and it should play just fine.

Do you sign up for that by being a Plex pass member? Sorry for all the questions lol. Does the file get installed on the tv via usb?

It was an option inside the LG Plex app - called “Enable Early Access” in the User options (click on your Username for the user options). Opting in downloaded the new Plex app, with the modern UI. I don’t believe it requires Plex Pass.

I’m on version 5.6.1 of the LG Plex app.

Funnily enough, i am on the early access and on 5.6.1 yet it wont play anything as DV lol

What’s the audio stream and codec used by those DV files?

Every HDR issue I’ve ever had with the LG Plex app - from lack of subtitles to artifacts to stuttering to black screens - was actually due to audio issues. I think when the app can’t direct play the audio stream, it starts transcoding and that throws everything else off.

It would either be Atmos or DTS X. My setup can handle all audio types so I like to encode the best track available. Think thats why?

If it’s Dolby TrueHD with Atmos, that could absolutely be why.

The LG Plex app cannot Direct Play Dolby TrueHD audio, and probably the same for the DTS equivalent - it can often transcode it, so you still get audio, but it’ll cause all sorts of issues from disabling subtitles to graphical corruption to not working at all.

Can you switch to a 5.1 audio stream before playing the file and try again? I include a 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus audio stream with all my files in addition to TrueHD specifically for compatibility with the LG Plex app.

I wish Blu-ray releases included DD+ with Atmos tracks in addition to the TrueHD with Atmos track, since the LG Plex app can handle DD+ with Atmos just fine, and I’ve found the addition of Atmos to be a huge improvement over standard DD+ in some content, while I can’t tell the difference between DD+ with Atmos and TrueHD with Atmos on my 5.1.2 system.

Remux = Ripped directly from disk and stored in a file without reencoding. Identical in quality to the disc.

Encode = Recompressed video and audio, to achieve a smaller file size/and or use a different compression algorithm.

Although, thinking about my question again, I’m not sure it would even be possible to do a DV encode… As the DV metadata is frame by frame, a different encode would throw the meta data…

does anyone who knows better think this makes sense?

Well that’s not true. I get Atmos+4K HDR on my OSMC Vero 4K.

I’m not familiar with the Vero 4K.

Which Plex client runs on it?

Regular Plex app (for Kodi) or you can run the Plex Kodi plugin.

The unit is well supported, too.

Has anyone been able to get DV to work directly on an Android TV? I’ve a Sony AG9, which seams to run Android TV locked in 60 Hz. Is that a showstopper or should DV still be able to work?

All DV mkvs I’ve tested so far falls back to HDR.

Can it do DV? I have a Vero 4K+, but as we’re not really getting any feedback about DV, and I just got a DV TV finally, I just placed an order for a Shield Pro :-/ … I’d rather not be sinking another $300 into media player hardware (U9-H → Vero 4K+ → now this), but I want DA+DV, and I want it now, like, for the holidays, while I’m off and have time to watch a lot of movies :-/

I thought I remembered reading that the Vero 4K+ hardware is technically capable of DV (they said the same about the SOC in the U9-H) … but that of course does not mean it will work :-/ … I may try playing around with it tonight - I didn’t realize we could install Plex or anything Plex related on it.

Alas no to DV, but quite frankly that’s small potatoes compared to the lack of support the Shield Pro receives in ALL regards compared to the 4K+, which is so well supported it’s incredible. I bought two of them, one for my movie room and one for the bedroom. It’s just aces.

Even with my LG CX OLED, I don’t care if a movie is in DV or HDR, - both look excellent. No projector (that I’m aware of) supports DV, so for my movie room it’s a non-issue.

I got the 77 CX primarily for VRR + 4K120, which with a Series X was a HUGE disappointment. Then I watched some HDR and was like “this isn’t really any better than my X940D … why did I spend $5k again?” … then I watched the Mando S2 finale in DV … my jaw hit the table - I have not ever seen a picture that good. Now I’m trying to make all my things DV! I’m hoping movies look as good as that did!

I was on special Vero 4K+ firmware for 3D support while I had the 940D … I figured I should do an update before trying any DV stuff … now I have the red plus of death and sad face loop, lol.

Oh well, I needed something to do this evening in lieu of a movie while I wait for the Shield to be ready for pick-up

I’ve watched a ton of HDR and DV stuff, and I honestly can’t say that I really care enough, despite the definite improvement of DV over HDR. The other stuff the Vero does so well makes it well worth the trade-off, especially given how little content there is in DV.

That said, The Mandalorian is great stuff, and part of that is the way it was shot (Digital, LED screens instead of green screen etc).

I just watched Tenet in HDR, and it was absolutely stunning.
