What's the status of Dolby Vision + Atmos on Plex? (re: LG WebOS, Nvidia Shield, Apple TV)

They rushed the technology. Gaming in high FPS and in HDR is overkill as it is. They barely released TV’s that “can” do it. They recalled Cyberpunk this last week because of glitches.

That being said. DV is overrated. HDR is basically the same thing and some major studios like Disney don’t even bother putting DV on their physical media. Universal and WB are coming close to that too.
That means they recognize that spending extra money on the DV license is not worth it because people really can’t see a difference.

Is the PLEX team actively working on enabling Dolby Vision and Atmos support? Is it a priority? I saw the page on HDR tonemapping says “This feature supports all video produced in HDR10, or in other formats that are backwards-compatible with HDR10 (including HDR10+ and most Dolby Vision content).” but seems like it doesn’t really.
My first post and I want to express my thanks to the PLEX team!

Curious, were you ever able to get this working? I am having the exact same issue with DV content, and my setup is similar: Shield 2019 Pro --> Denon x3700h --> LG CX. No issues with my Shield playing DV content from other sources, ie Netflix, etc. This Plex issue is kinda driving me nuts!

Hello, another one around here that does not work the DV through plex either, I have early access of plex 5.6.1 on my LG. Could it be that they haven’t released a version compatible with LG yet?

From my understanding there is two types of DV, single layer and double layer. Every streaming app like Netflix, Disney+,etc are using single layer dolby vision files. But all blu-ray disc that we can rip are double layer and are not supported by any player on the market besides Oppo blu-ray player and copy of those with the ISO structure. Apparently you can mux now double layer to single layer DV in mkv. But you are encoding the file so probably losing something. The lack of support from my understanding is not because of Plex but because of compatibility on decode player. For exemple TV can only decode single layer DV. i don’t think we ever going to see true double layer DV support on plex because of that. If we do see support it’s going to be an algorithme enhencement applied dirctly by Plex player. But like i said if you can make a single layer then you should be able to trigger DV on your TV if everything is passthrough.

Sorry for my english i’m French

The Dolby Vision spec has a bunch of subtlety beyond “single layer” and “dual layer”. The issue with remuxing dual layer Blu-ray into a single-layer file is that the resulting file still doesn’t match any of the DV profiles exactly.

It’s like ordering the poached salmon with fries instead of green beans. Maybe the kitchen will take your order and maybe it won’t.

Yep that’s why for now i am not touching the ISO structure but if Plex could decode it. It will be mind blowing. I recall you need a special chip to do so. That’s why i m not sur it ever will.

I’ve done som further testing on my Sony AG9 (running Plex in Android TV) with Dolby Vision mkv-files.

  • Single layer Profile 4 - does not work
  • Single layer Profile 5 - works fine
  • Single layer Profile 7 - does not work

Welcome to the Plex forums.

Regarding your question about the Shield, one reason for ownership is the ability to bitstream the TrueHD + Atmos and dts/-HD/:X audio formats.

There are two forms of Atmos for home theaters: “Streaming Atmos,” used by Netflix, et al, which is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 + Atmos; and “Blu-ray Atmos,” the version found on Blu-ray discs, which is TrueHD 7.1 + Atmos.

Due to LG restrictions, no app, Plex included, can pass TrueHD, including TrueHD + Atmos, audio to attached audio equipment, even when HDMI-eARC is in use. Based on posts in this and other forums, the restriction appears to be due to a hardware limitation in the LG TV.

A second reason is for support of dts and dts-HD audio. LG recently dropped support for dts audio from their TVs. Because of this, Plex now transcodes dts audio when it is played via the Plex app.

For older LG TVs that support dts audio, the lossy dts 5.1 core can be passed via HDMI-ARC/eARC. However, dts-HD/dts:X audio faces the same restrictions as TrueHD audio. In this case, the Plex app passes the lossy dts core, discarding the lossless portions of the stream.

The number of devices that can bitstream (passthrough) both types of Atmos and dts-HD/:X audio is very limited. Adding 4K HDR video into the mix restricts the list even further, even if you put DV aside and just focus on HDR10.

At the end of the day, the only viable off the shelf device is the Nvidia Shield Pro. It is not without its own limitations, and many things, Dolby Vision included, are still a work in progress.

Hopefully this answers some of your questions as to why some Plex users prefer the Shield to other clients.

Nope I could not get Dolby Vision to work on Plex and Shield. Only HDR10 works and that will not cut it for me.
The shield will be going back to amazon.

Here’s a log file from the Plex client on my Sony AG9 TV trying to play a DV-mkv file. Not sure if any Plex developers read this thread, but hopefully it can help. (File removed)

Dolby Vision is mentioned a few times, like here: [ExoPlayer][EventLogger] decoderInitialized [1.56, 0.00, window=0, video, OMX.dolby.vision.dvhe.stn.decoder]

Still DV is never triggered.

Same problem here that many others are having. I have the Shield Pro 2019 going through a Denon Dolby Vision compatible receiver to an LG C8 OLED and I can’t get an MKV with DV to trigger Dolby Vision (it just plays regular HDR10).

Edit: looks like I got it working. I’m not sure what I did but one thing for sure is having to go into the Shield resolution settings and making sure the output mode is set to 4k @ 59.94Hz with DV and HDR10, and also toggle the Dolby Vision switch on in that same screen.
I didn’t have refresh rate switching or anything else like that on in Plex.

I have got this working after having the same issue with getting HDR10 popping up instead of DV. I have the Sheild going to an LG GX OLED through a Denon XVC4700H amp. I had to change the Resolution to 4K 23.976hz Dolby Vision and HDR10 ready in the shield setttings menu and I changed refresh rate switching off and resolution switching off in the Plex settings and this did it for me.

I’m not finding them at the moment, but folks have commented that automatic rate switching & Dolby Vision don’t always play nicely together.

Yeah, it really depends on what the TV supports. I’m fortunate that my TV has excellent DV support across all refresh rates (and I’d hope so for what I paid for it!), but not all sets have DV support at all refresh rates

Hey!
Ive come across issues with atmos/vision clipping out constantly. If I change the audio to a lossy format the film plays back fine. Sometimes the DV works sometimes not.

My setup is Shield Pro 2019 + LG CX and playing files in plex with a HDD directly connected to it.

Would love for this to get resolved! Other than that Plex is amazing

Any way to find out what is supported besides trial and error?

Logs from the Shield/ATV/etc at the device level, Plex client logs, TV service manual, etc?

Hi all.

Just to let you know that I have successfully been able to get a few DV / EAC3+Atmos files to work on my 2019 Shield Pro 16GB purchased last week, however these are in MP4 containers. I am aware that DV is supposed to work within MKV containers, but not yet found any examples, and currently have no way to rip in order to experiment.

My config is… Shield -> HDMI -> Denon AVC-X6700H -> HDMI -> Sony XH950

Also worth noting, I have also been able to successfully play the same MP4 files via the Internal Plex app directly on the Sony XH950, which happily passes through the EAC3+Atmos track back to the AVR via ARC.

In both of the above examples, DV showed up on the TV’s info screen, and Atmos showed up on the AVR.

I am very interested in eventually getting the Full Fat DV+TrueHD-Atmos to work, but no examples to play with yet.

I honestly am not 100% sure, I’d need to wait on one of our Android engineers coming back (who’s on leave at the moment) to see if this is something that’s exposed to us or not.

My personal setup is Shield Pro (2019) -> HEOS Bar -> Sony Z9D, and I’ve been able to get DV working with both mp4 and mkv, with TrueHD and DTS-HD audio. My soundbar doesn’t decode Atmos/DTS:X, but does do TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Thanks for the quick reply. Please check in when they’re back from leave. It would be nice if that level of detail is available.
