Right now I’m running OpenPHT/Rasplex 1.6.2. through the HDStation app on my Qnap ts-251+, but it’s causing me a lot of problems, with framerate issues, stuttering choppy scrolling through libraries and sudden 100% usage of my ram (8gb). So now I’m seriously considering getting a ras pi 3 and installing rasplex on that, but before I do I just need to ask you guys what your experience is with rasplex 1.6.2. on a ras pi? Do you get smooth playback without stuttering or are there issues on this setup aswell?
I can confirm that it works perfectly smooth on both, the RPi2 and RPi3. Setup is pretty easy. However, I did some rare crashes and the interface getting stuck in previous builds. Since I updated(about 3 months now), everything is back to normal.
If you’re going to buy new, take a look at the Odroid-C2 as an alternative to the RPi3.

Thanks, that sounds very good. Are you running smooth at a constant 60hz or have you enabled the “adjust display refresh rate” option? I have both 24fps and 25fps files and this is where I have alot of problems on the hdstation, so I’m very interested to know if the ras pi 3 runs smooth at a constant 60hz or can switch refresh rate without any problems.
Also are you running the media from a NAS or how’s your setup?

Thanks that looks very interesting, but unfortunately there serms to be no distributors in Denmark, meaning I would have to import from the U.S., which adds alot to the price with shipping and high import taxes. I’m not sure it’s worth that much more than the RPi3. I would probably only be using it for rasplex, but I don’t know if the playback of that is better on the Odroid C2. Maybe you know?
Been using Rasplex on a PI2 for more than a year now, no real problems.
I never got CEC to work so that I could use one remote for both and turn them on and off together. Apparently the whole CEC thing is a bit hit or miss generally.
After a power outage I had to rebuild the card, it would sort of work but freeze up a lot and also ignore the remote while video was playing. Put a fresh image on the card and everything was fine again.
The biggest problem is a cat walking over the wireless keyboard I use as a remote while we’re watching a movie.

There are more distributors for it than just in the U.S.

Speaking of remote control. How are people controlling the RPi. Right now I’m controlling my qnap’s hdstation by an app on my phone which works very well. Is there a similar app for RPi or how does it work?
I see you mentioning something called CEC which allows you to control the Pi using your standard samsung tv remote, is that correct?
Also in the setup guides of the Pi they keep mentioning using a usb keyboard for initial setup. Is this really neccessary as I only have a laptop available?

I got mine from Amazon, here in Germany.

4K and HEVC direct play. Also bitstreaming of many HD surround audio codecs. All things the RasPi3 cannot do.
IR receiver integrated.
scrolling through the library is almost as fluid as on my PC.
thumbs up!

CEC is a protocol for sending commands over HDMI. It would allow the TV remote to have controlled Plex on the Pi. What I really wanted though was to allow the Pi to turn off the TV when it was idle. Then I wouldn’t need to remember to do that manually. Of course it would turn the TV back on as well when you started using it again.

I never tried setting one up without a keyboard, it might be possible to set things up through the remote login but it wouldn’t be easy. I guess they just assume most people have one (or more) extra keyboard lying around.
John
My experience has been good, but I have a beefy back-end which I’m sure helps. There was an issue with it losing connectivity with the server frequently requiring a reboot but some update seems to have fixed that.
For a remote I’m using a MeLE F10 with the intention of making the special buttons work but not there yet. Having the keyboard is nice though.
Thanks for replying. I’ve now bought an almost completely new RPi 3 which was available for less than 50$ including chassis, micro sd and poweradapter. So cheap I’ll have to try it out before deciding whether to go with this or the odroid c2.

You don’t need a keyboard. I use Swift Remote from my android phone. Can’t seem to get the software keyboard to work, but the only time that’s a problem (just annoying, really… it’s still possible) is when you want to enter a WiFi password. ![]()
I’ve seen some people recommending the Odroid C2 over the raspberry pi and ive been thinking about getting one as i have a 4K TV now. Can anyone advise how to set it up, is it the same as the Pi and i just need the rasplex image on a Micro SD card and then put it in the Odroid C2? or is there further configuration/setup required?

You need to download the special image of OpenPHT for the Odroid, not Rasplex.
The flashing of the SD card is the same.
If your TV supports HDMI-CEC (which about all TVs do nowadays), there is nothing else to do than just stick the SD card in and power it up.
It will ask you to connect the device to your plex account, which is easy enough by going to https://plex.tv/link and typing in the 4-digit code the device displays.
That’s at least my experience.
It might get a bit more complicated if you involve wireless lan oder any other non-standard configuration.
I’ll add that my experience with rasplex on a rpi2 is excellent. It’s just what I needed to replace an older mac mini (stuck on snow leopard) which was running PHT. IMO, it’s (openpht) the only serious HTPC Plex client right now.
I control it with a Harmony remote via a BT dongle (no IR reliability issues!). My PMS is a linux VM on my server (it mounts the media via nfs).
I can’t speak to your 60hz question…
Just to answer my own question. I received my RPi3 today and I must say it runs rasplex very well. All the issues I had with OpenPHT on the Qnap HDStation are now gone and so far I have not had any issues with stuttering or tearing and all the extreme ram usage issues are also gone.
Setup was easy and there was no need for ethernet cables or keyboards. It connected to my WiFi immediately and the CEC connected without issues allowing me to use my remote for setup.
So all in all a very good experience so far.
