Whenever family watches 1080p while i'm playing games on pc games are unplayable

First off, I like to think i have a pretty advanced computer, but whenever 1080p is streaming it makes playing games unplayable… lag/glitching/screen jumping just nonstop making it unable to play w/e i’m playing

PC SPECS
~Intel Core i3-6100 @3.70 ghz
~32GB ram
~Geforce 1060 6ghz video card
~64 bit,

I mean its not top of the line in gaming, but definitely not your mom’s computer… and it wasn’t until recently that this started.

Could it be the external hard drive i store everything on that would be slowing it down… could it be settings in plex IDK!!! i’m stressing
cuz my kid loves a lot of the movies i have but majority of them are 1080p… so he cannot watch them if i’m on the pc… Please HELPPP!

An alternate strategy, admittedly one requiring more time on your part, is to ensure your media is DirectPlay or DirectStream so that transcoding isn’t necessary.

i actually didn’t have hardware acceleration enabled, any other possible fixes i could use in the plex settings? that i might not be aware of, aside from updating library idk much else on the settings aspect of it

and 99.99% of all my movies are streamed from pc, to Roku wireless i have 100/100 up/down connection so speed definitely isnt the issue

You need a PC with a much stronger CPU than the i3 if you want to transcode 1080p and play games at the same time. A better GPU would not hurt either.

Look to upgrading to an i7 procesor at the very least, or invest in an Intel NUC or similar to run Plex on. The NUC will need to be an i5, an i7 being better of course. The i3 NUC’s do not have enough processing power for transcoding high quality, high bitrate files.

In simple terms, assuming you have Hardware Acceleration enabled in Plex, then your GPU is going to be maxed out by transcoding 1080p and your game wants as much GPU as it can get it hands on and the GPU has to be fed by the CPU, so you are maxing out everything just about.

Another solution may be to re-encode the files so that transcoding is not required and they can be Direct Played. The preferred format is MP4 H.264/AAC or AVC/AAC as this is the most compatible format across the most devices.

I recommend HandBrake (free for PC/Mac) or any similar software to re-encode your files with.

If using HandBrake, start with the Fast 1080p 30 preset and enable Web Optimised. On the Video tab, enable Fast Decode. All of the other settings should be fine, so do not mess with them. Do check the Audio, Subtitle and Chapter tabs are to your liking before you proceed to re-encode the file though.

and how long does it take to transcode movies? i generally “acquire” them in bunches while proxied so as to not alert the fuzz  and can you also queue them up for instance “do this one now, after its finished start the next, ect.” so i could do them overnight?

no, i said i didnt have hardware acceleration activated, was wondering how much of a difference it would make, cuz its not as if the game wont run, it’ll run but it just has hiccups every like 5-6 seconds while playing if it could eliminate that it’d be golden, as for a new processor would an i7/5 be my best bet if i switched?

wow incredibly, using hardware acceleration, has all but fixed the issue. can now play fortnite while she streams 1080
