Which clients if any still support Offline / local access to the plex server if the internet is down

I have noticed that as soon as the internet goes down in the house that a get a large number of complaints about plex not working…

I currently use the following clients on the same network as the plex server.

  • Vizio
  • Xbox360 (probably doesn’t work without access to live)
  • iOS
  • Windows 10 app

The old style Roku client that I no longer used did have offline support, but it may have only worked with authentication turned off.

With the Home feature and Plex accounts isn’t there still supposed to be token caching and limited offline access to a local server?

I haven’t simulated a full outage to test extensively but every once and a while when the internet goes down I do get someone in the family having trouble accessing it, mostly because they obviously get kicked off of Netflix and YouTube and look to Plex for something else to watch.

Clients that support autologin: such as Rasplex/OpenPHT. If you enable autologin in the preferences, the clients cache the authentication token and allow them to connect. However, secure servers requires internet access as Plex.tv is doing the authentication and certificate handling. You may be able get around this by using your own certificate. However I have not tested it.

Hmm that isn’t really what I wanted to hear… The TVs are shared devices so auto-login isn’t an option, we want the choice forced at start to keep the kids in the kids libraries…

I’ve had success using the following clients when either the internet or plex.tv was down.

Roku
Smart TV app on Vizio
PMP
Android app.

These were all part of a Plex Home, and the last logged in user could still use the app.
