Which TV Brand?

I am about to replace an older TV with a 55" TV. I don’t really care for 3D and I really don’t care for active 3D. I do care for Plex and internet apps such as Skype. That seems to leave only LG and Samsung. LG has the wand remote which is neat but the Plex gui seems slow on the LG. They are both interesting. The LG ST600 media player box has been less than stellar, to say the least. So the $2000 question is which TV to get. Samsung (a D series) or the LG ( the LW5600 or LV5400). Can the Samsung TV’s be controlled by a wireless keyboard?

Thanks,

philip

Edit: Am not trying to get into a media player vs TV vs brand war. I am well aware that media players are more powerful for what they do. I don’t care about DTS. Just plain stereo sound. I have zero interest in DLNA. I do care about the video picture and how well Plex runs.

I can’t really say much about the LG implementation, though having read some in their forums, there seems to be quite a bit complaining going on.

As for samsung, the Plex implementation is great. Looks and handles like osx plex but lacks music, plugin & myPlex support. If you have 3D movies, the samsung will automatically

switch into the correct 3D mode, providing you have labeled correctly.

Be ware though. I bought 3 D8005 models (40", 46" and 55") for my home. They may look bad-ass, but when you handle them, their build quality seems pretty ■■■■■■. they are low weight, because they are

plastic. On all mine, I can actually see the actual edge leds when i look at the screen from an angle (no problem at normal viewing angles though). Coming from Plasma, black levels also leaves much to be desired, but I guess thats the case with all/most led TVs. I would have expected better TVs for the price tag. As far as Plex goes though, the implementation is great, and still moving forward at great pace.

Thank you very much for the informative reply.

I was looking at the 2D UN55D6000 . I know very little about 3D except that a Sony 3D TV I tried was uncomfortable in 3D mode. The LG 3D for some odd reason didn’t, but I still can’t imagine using it in 3D mode.

Does it matter that there seem to me different 3D implementations? That is, will a 3D movie play on both a Samsung with its active 3D and an LG with its passive 3D? What happens if 3D is available without glasses? Are we talking VHS versus beta or Blu-ray versus HD-video ? All confusing.

In any case, you have certainly painted a good picture of the Samsung Plex. I really like the OSX Plex. The LG version seems very sluggish, at least on my ST600 media box from LG ( well there is also the issue of it not being quite optimal yet).

I have a 52" 5 year old LCD Samsung which is thicker than the LED backlighting versions. But it works fine, colours are nice ( including blacks) and it certainly doesn’t feel cheap. Very solid in fact. I guess when they get thin it is harder to make it feel solid and prices of TV’s are incredibly low compared to 5 years ago. Something has to give I guess.

Behind the times here…I was aware that LG Smart TVs had Plex built in, but I wasn’t aware that Samsung TVs do. Are there specific models only?

Thanks

For what it’s worth I went with an LG 55LW5600. Very happy with it. Plex works great for us on it. Not sluggish and the wand is well integrated with everything. DTS was never an issue for me so that aspect didn’t play any part in the decision. Passive 3D has turned out to be very neat so that was a bonus.

do your eyes and soul a favour and grab a Samsung, they’re the best tv’s around.

Not clear. Moreover active 3D is not for everyone. I looked very carefully at both Samsung and LG. We have always had only Sony and Samsung TV's but went with the LG with no regrets.

You are all wrong  , Panasonic has the best TVs around. But as no Plex integration (no client inside the Panasonic TV) has been made Panasonic might be disqualified for you.

Hello there!

I am new here/

May I ask if you have any idea on which models of Samsung TVs are compatible with Plex?

I am using Samsung Plasma TV...specifiically, PS43E490 43" Series 4 Plasma TV.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance!
