I have PMS on Synology 918+.
I watch movies on TV (PS4 PRO), computers and Ipad.
There is no problem with any quality, even 80GB 4K movies works perfect on computers and PS4.
All 720p and 1080p with bitrate up to 15 Mbps works well even with subtitles on Ipad, computers and PS4.
1080P with high bitrate (over 15 Mbps) WITH SUBTITLES working good on computers but are (well I don’t have a good english word - stop every few second and than play again).
As I understand PMS do transcoding to put subtitles on the screen. Why it works perfectly on computers but not on Ipad and PS4?
In this example movie was ripped from my BD disk and mkv file weight 27 GB. It includes DTS sound and AC3 sound in other language and embed subtitles.
I don’t care about Ipad but in my living room I use PS4 to watch movies as my TV is not smart enough to have Plex client.
Which unit will solve a problem? Amazon Fire? Nvidia Shield? Chromcast?
If somehow I can watch this movies with subtitles on computers in Direct Play, maybe there is a unit which I can attach to my TV and home theater? (I would like to have DTS sound).
To me it has become a issue of Title content selection with certain file codec and container. In general most mkv with acc or ac3 audio have become the current norm for many clients/players etc
Now if your using a Receiver with a TV with ARC, totally different story.
Shield should play DTS.
If I will have this setup:
_NAS (PMS) - Shield (Plex client) - receiver - TV - will I get what I want - Direct Play and hassle free DTS sound ?
_
eventually I can try
NAS as disk only - Shield (PMS and client?) - receiver - TV
In second case I will loose possibility to watch movies outside home (if I turn off Shield).

If I was going to recommend anything, I would recommend an Odroid C2 running RasPlex/OpenPHT. It will handle HEVC and 4K and a whole lot in between. This will still require you to re-encode some files, although the majority of them will play as RasPlex/OpenPHT supports a lot more formats than most other STB’s.
I will check )droid C2 but to be honest I’m looking for solution which will work almost out of the box. This mini computer sound great but then I need to spend hours on learning how to use Linux and set it up to one only purpose - watching movie.
Thank you
DanDJ. I hope you are not Nvidia reseller
Trumpy81 - you idea is also good, for sure cheaper.
Now I have other needs, in March I probably decide about one of these solutions. I hope (if I choose Shield) there will be no announcement for new Shield few weeks after. I had bad luck of this kind few times.
