Why are generated photo thumbnails corrupted?

Hi,

I’m using plexmediaserver_1.9.7.4460-a39b25852_amd64.deb on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS.
When I create a new photo library it scans all my photos (~13k) and starts creating thumbnails for every photo. Unfortunately almost half all photo thumbnails a corrupted (see attached screenshot). What could cause that? I tried different PMS versions, deleted the library and so on.. nothing helps.

Best regards,
Karsten

Hmm, could be a few reasons.

Firstly I’d suggest you update to the latest version (https://www.plex.tv/downloads/). 1.9.7 is pretty outdated by now and there have been numerous bug fixes, many of them related to photos, since then.

If you could provide your server logs it may shed some light on this. Maybe just create a new section first that reproduces this issue then download your logs from Settings -> Server -> Help -> Download logs and post them here or PM them to me.

Are these photos on a network share or local disk? My first instinct would be that PMS is getting bad data to begin with either due to a flaky network connection or a failing disk (or disk controller) but I can’t tell much without any evidence.

Oh, sorry… I copied an old installation file name. I’m on version 1.12.0.4829.

The files are on a smb/cifs share which is mounted on my PMS. The fileserver is a virtualized Debian on RAID5 (LSI RAID controller). I’ve another photo library which is accessing the exact same share without problems. The only difference is that those photos were taken with several mobile phones… and the photos in the library I have problems with were taken with an Canon EOS 400D/60D (I already excluded CR2 files, because I thought they may cause those problems).

I deleted the library and created it again, the scan is in progress… after it’s done I will send you the logs.

Thank you in advance!
