Hello all! So I have setup a Plex media server on a Synology DS918+. I am having an issue where the bottleneck is the LAN. The wired connection in the room with the 4k TV is limited to a 100mbps lan, due to Direct TV and having to use a “Broadband DECA”. Some of my 4k HDR movies are requiring as much as 130 mbps in order to not have studdering and or buffering. My WIFI router is an ASUS RT-AC88U which is advertised as being able to handle 3gbps on the 5G. I get way more buffering over WIFI than the DECA which is usually averaging 90 mbps. WHY am i not able to stream media over my wifi network like i am supposed to? It makes no sense. Back when I had cable internet, it was able to maintain a 300mpbs internet speed with no issues. My NAS is connected to the wifi router via 2-1 Gigabit link aggregation. I have given the NAS and the plex media player client both Static Ip addresses, and put them both top priority in the QOS, as well as selected Media streaming as the top priority in the QOS. AM I MISSING SOMETHING???
Just that the 3Gbps is the total bandwidth of combining the 2.4GHz and 5GHz network, the real speed is much less and dependent on the wireless capability of the TV. Wireless is shared with all devices in the house and has more latency by default. Make sure the tv is connecting on the 5GHz network, move all less critical devices to the 2.4GHz network.
Do you have neighbors that are close by? TV far away from router? Run wifi analyzer looking for adjacent signals? Put the TV as the top device in your QOS?
So I’m confused … you say the TV is hardwired here, yet you’re talking about using Wifi on the TV. I’m fairly sure on most TVs if you’re using the LAN port, it will not allow a wireless connection as well.
Yes. I have everything hard wired on a 100 mbps lan. This limitation is due to the Deca or what used to be called a “cinema connection kit”. Regular MOCA doesnt work with DTV because the frequency interferes with one another. 100 mbps has been plenty so far for online gaming, streaming 4k Netflix ect. But now that I am streaming(direct play) Raw 4k HDR videos, i need more bandwidth. So i tried the 5G wifi channel. Like i said before previously when i had 300mbps internet i had no issue with wifi downloading that fast over the internet,in fact I would usually get 330 mbps over Wifi. But now I’m trying to stream from my NAS (not over the internet) and it’s doing maybe 50mbps. Its ridiculous. My 5G wifi channel has absolutely no interference because none of my neighbors have 5G wifi yet (I tested this with wifi analyzer). I think I’m going to try my Asus AC87U in bridge mode and see if I can make this happen.
You must keep in mind that, due to the much higher frequency, 5GHz WiFi is acting even more like visible light. i.e. it can and will be severely dampened by obstacles in the line of sight between router and TV.
If the tv manufacturer has skimped on the number of tuners/antennas, the TV might also not be able to receive reflected RF beams well or use the RF channel to its full capacity.
Yes I’m thinking that my issue is the wifi nic in the TV and my PS4 PRO I guess. My TV is a Samsung Q6FN. I’m going to try using my other high power router in bridge mode, maybe the massive antenna will be sufficient. At least I’m praying
I was using a wired connection, but as I said its limitation is 100mbps and I need a little more. So I’m trying Wifi instead. And to be honest, I can play the first 5 minutes of a 4k movie with no issues, but then I start getting buffering issues. I guess the Wifi NIC in my TV(this is the PMP I tried first) and my PS4 PRO(PMP I tried second) is not fast enough. And to the comments above about 4k being a waste of space… bro, you obviously haven’t seen how beautiful it looks on my Samsung QLED. I’m not worried about space. My purpose built NAS has 12TB of storage to work with.
So you mention your NAS - is this your Plex server, and if so, are you 100% positive its direct playing to your clients, because I don’t think the PS4 client handles most codecs very well.
I can direct play 10bit HDR 4K movies to my Sony Android TV Plex client just fine, form both a server hosted on my MacMini and my Synology NAS but everything direct plays (no transcoding)
Alright! After about 2 hours of troubleshooting, I was able to successfully setup a Wifi media bridge. The 5G link between the 2 routers is 1.4Gbps. And around 1.2Gbps Sustained. This is what I should have done in the first place. I can now stream Lossless 4K HDR movies with no issues. I love it!!
