Why does it have s10e8 on deck when earlier episodes are unwatched?

It is based on the last episode watched and will show you the next unwatched episode after that. Not the earliest unwatched episode. because generally folks want the next part of the story

Say if there is an anthology show like American Horror Story, or True Detective, and I only wanted to watch the story arc of season 2 which has nothing to do with season 1 and I have no intention of watching season 1. After I watch S02E01, I want S02E02 to show up in CW because that would be the next part of the story, not S01E01

i marked the entire show as watched. then it started playing season 00 when i hit play, which is odd, so i marked season 00 as played. then it did this. i hadn’t watched anything else yet

Oh i had not noticed it was the Specials season that was watched. I should have explained in more detail. CW actually uses the dates not episode numbers it was just easier to explain with the ep numbers.

Specials can air at all sorts of times even years after the main season episodes. After the last special marked as watched, then the next episode it will show is the one that aired after that even if not in the specials season. Some shows like Dr Who have specials that are often integral to the main season stories so CW episodes will be presented as they aired.

If they had air dates like below and you it would show up in CW in that order.
S10E7 aired on Jan 1, 2023
S00E02 aired on Jan 2, 2023
S10E08 aired on Jan 3, 2023

so if S00E02 was the last one marked as watched then S10E8 would be next for CW

that’s wild.
