Why does Plex ignore the .mp3 files I place into my music library?

I created a Music library and chose a subdirectory folder on disk. Inside I have:

Music
  +-- Natalie Cole
          +-- Natalie Cole - Unforgettable with Love
                 +-- The Very Thought of You.mp3
                 +-- etc.

I wait and nothing happens. I click on the … context menu next to Music (in my Plex browser administration application) and ask it to Scan Library Files. It does nothing. All other attempted interaction with this library results either in nothing or in an error to the effect that there is no content.

I’ve tried to follow https://support.plex.tv/articles/200265296-adding-music-media-from-folders/, but nothing works.

Thank you very much. I have successfully used Plex for many years for everything but music because it’s just never worked for me. I will investigate your solutions to naming and fully expect these to solve my problem. (I’m a Linux-only user, but appreciate the tagging suggestion. I’m not looking forward to tagging thousands upon thousands of MP3s, but I’ll investigate. Again, thank you profusely.)
