I 'm using the free - and thus It will play on any TV ; the paid one allows you to use your mobile devices and would otherwise have time limits;
This is rather annoying though: You spend time going through your folders and you browse through the web app and create these playlists so that you can better organize your home screen on your TV. But as time goes on, the items in your playlist disappear; when I navigate to the home screen it will show the total play time and then you click on the playlist to see what is inside, and shows 0 items.
And this has been on an ongoing glitch well before any updates; I keep desktop software up to date; the obvious fix would be to go through and delete the playlists with the blank icon; because I canât go back and add stuff back to it; I have to delete and re create it. Is this a glitch in the web app software thing or what?
The place where the movies are stored on my computer hasnât changed; thus I would update the directory; the movies are still in the recently added; thereâs something strange going on with the playlists loosing the links
The Playlists that I create are Video playlists, using the plex web app; once Iâm looking through the original movie collection, I select the movies or movie from the videos section (that part off off to the side that has tabs for playlists, recently added, my videos) and I use the tool to add to a playlists; I havenât set up any playlists for music or pictures ;
Prior to posting, I went to search through and do some digging, but I got annoyed with the forum thing, and didnât want to take the time to browse through hundreds of pages that the search pulled up with âplaylists in itâ. To tell you the truth, Iâm probably going to close my account and remove the apps because its a lot of work to create custom playlists and have the items disappear over time; and buy those broadcasting kits to mirror my computer to my TV;
In the attachments I have posted 4 pictures; I took with my phone, then emailed them to myself to get them on my computer;
that tab where it says movies, once I go there, I view it by folders, then create custom playlists; but as you can see, there are a few playlists on the home screen that are supposed to have items in it, and did, but disappears;
Hm, I assumed your playlists were âsmartâ playlists (which are auto-updating) but that is not the case I see.
The items which are collected in your playlists, are they often recognized wrong? (i.e. does plex load wrong posters and descriptions for them?)
I think when they get matched incorrectly and they were previously added to a playlist, the playlist loses the reference to them. But that is just an assumption.

changing the posters are easy, these are ones I add myself.
That is not what I meant.
If Plex recognises a media item incorrectly, this item gets a different guid. This guid is what identifies a media item in Plex. And this is what gets added to a playlist.
If now your items get new guids over time (because they get 'unmatched/rematched`), then they would vanish from playlists.
I have the same problem. A video playlist with 152 items in it gradually shrinks, its down to 109 now, and it seems every few days more and more disappear. How do we stop this from happening? Its very frustrating to build a playlist that big, have things disappear, and then have to try and figure out what is missing when there is no other record of what was in it in the first place.
open the web app https://app.plex.tv/desktop
go to Playlists on the left side
scroll to view the icon of the affected playlist
does it have a small âcog wheelâ icon on top of its poster?
If it does, it means this is a âsmartâ playlist, which was created with some filters.
A smart playlist does store the original filter rules, which were used to create it.
The most basic example would be a smart playlist which is consisting of âunplayedâ items.
Afterwards, as soon as those items are played, they get removed from the smart playlist.
No it does not have the cog wheel. I play this playlist all the time and movies are not removed after they are played. The playlist is set to play randomly and repeat when its done.
Settings - Server - Library - âEmpty trash automatically after every scanâ
Is your media storage externally to your server machine and do you have the above preference activated?
Above preference is activated. What is considered trash? I have used fix match, but I only use it on individual files, not the entire library. My library is quite large, over 1000 1080p and 4k movies. My media storage is on 2 network devices and a couple of local 1TB drives. Networked are Dlink DNS-321 4TB, and a Seagate ST4000 4TB. Wired Gigabit network.
Items of which the files were not available/inaccessible during the latest library update are considered âtrashedâ.
If this option is activated, the items get immediately removed from the library - and from all playlists too.
Therefore you should never activate it if your media storage is outside of the server machine. There is too much which can go wrong with external media storage and cause the files to be (temporarily) unavailable.
Upon next library update, the files get found again, but of course they are not automatically added back to any playlists.
Well that really sucks. It is enabled by default when you install the server, I didnt even know that setting was there. So then that is probably what is happening. I have it disabled now, so weâll see.
I feel your pain, just updated my server version and every item accross 50 playlists has been removed.
Hours and hours of work lost in an instant - this setting should NEVER be a default out of the box setting.
How about some kind of warning before the upgrade if this setting is detected and also plex detects that your media is not on your local drive.
