Why don't filenames match when copying directly from Android via USB vs uploading via Plex?

It seems like plex renames the files which on disk mounted via USB have a name like “IMG_20160802_123947.jpg” but when uploaded via plex look like “2016-08-02 12.39.47.jpg” Is there anything I can do so that plex won’t rename them?

I spent a few minutes looking for previous answers to this question but didn’t see what I was looking for.

Anyone???

Presently this is expected behavior and you can’t prevent the renaming. This thread from 2014 brought it up as well. I don’t believe there are any immediate plans to change this at this time, however your feedback has been sent over to the devs.

Thanks for the answer.

It seems like a minor change? (Just need to comment out a line or two which re-interpret the filename) It would be fabulous to get this updated – you will probably see this coming to light more often now that the new feature of uploading video and photos together (which is awesome!) but still unusable for me because of the effort involved in de-duplication with changed filenames.

@kinoCharlino – any changes or news on the topic of [not] renaming when uploading? When compared with google or other cloud sync tools, the filename change implemented by plex’s upload is unexpected and doesn’t allow de-duplication of files which may have arrived via different methods.

Plus it just seems like it’s more work – a straightforward copy would have to be less work, right? It’s not clear from the other thread what the behavior is on iOS, are they also renamed or is that always what iOS does anyway?

Any updates on this? I simply won’t use this feature until we can at least get an option to turn off file renaming.

I consolidated all the threads I found: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/285560/stop-renaming-photo-video-uploads#latest

@harr2969 and all,

Most likely not the news you want to hear, but this has been raised and I understand that this is done on purpose to prevent dupes. Yes, I know its different than other cloud providers. There is a case here, just haven’t convinced them yet of it ;). I am filing a new GHI referencing this thread to bring it to the attention of the right folks.

Thanks, not sure if my consolidated thread would be more useful, it’s linked just above.

I understand the potential to have dupes, but the solution seems more impactful than the issue.

A more measured approach would be to address dupes on an individual file basis as needed rather than renaming every file.

@harr2969, yes your consolidated thread would be very helpful for the issue I am filing. Thanks!
