Stop renaming photo/video uploads

This breaks reconciliation with physical storage and creates a ton of duplication.

It’s been reported many times over the years

I can’t use the upload feature until this (bug? issue?) is resolved.

Thanks!

I completely agree! I recently purchased Plex Pass, but will be cancelling if this is not fixed!

I am having the same problem. The photos keep renaming. Can we add a setting to keep the original setting?

Agreed. Or better yet, just make options allowing a user to create a renaming rule or keep the original filename.

Any updates regarding this? I just realized this quirk myself.

Add me to the list to stop renaming my photos and videos. Doesn’t make it easy to meld my already existing library in google with Plex without tons of duplicates that have to be weeded out manually. How hard can it be to add a preference to NOT rename photos? Seems like renaming would actually take more work.

Testing plexpass for camera upload for the first time, came on, the feature works well, but you cannot rename the files!.
Also you should upload the pictures in subfolders by day or month/year.
Please stop renaming files /give the user the power to decide if they want to keep the original file name and if a duplicated is found just rename the duplicate.

Please disable this. Makes it unusable.

Changing users’ data like this is not a good practice. If you want to offer this capability it should be up to the user to enable it. Please stop renaming our files!

+1 please make it optional

+1 please change this

Completely agree with this. It causes so many issues some of which have been mentioned here already but to name a few of the major ones I’ve encounted

  1. makes it hard to audit what has been uploaded. Especially when you need to reset camera upload because it just stops working and then it re-uploads all your pictures from scratch
  2. The date it is using to rename the files to isn’t even accurate in all cases. I have made a new folder when i had the need to reset camera upload on a device and the create and modify dates on some of the files are different so the same file is now uploaded with 2 different filename/datetime stamp (based on the date times I’m assuming the pictures were transfered to a new device)
  3. Since the naming only goes to the seconds you can actually have 2 files with the same date time (pretty easily, i’ve reproduced it on demand though i don’t recommend doing so though because this will cause camera upload to fail until you delete/rename the first file uploaded so the name isn’t a duplicate. the camera handles it with a (1) appended to the name. I can’t tell you how long my camera upload was broken before i figured this out

Please allow for advanced setting to override the default camera upload naming setting.
I actually rename my photos based on exif time stamp keeping the original file name: YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS_Original.Ext

At least if its an advanced setting, people mucking with the setting have an idea of the results.
[XML modifications even]

Anyone hear if this issue was going to be addressed?

using upload feature for the first time from Samsung S7 to Plex Server on Windows 7. Had the following issues

  • Less than 20% images showing in Gallery uploaded. Does the software expect images to be in a particular folder or from a certain date as I organise all my pictures into folders on the phone.
  • Renaming of files causes problem. What determines the filename as pictures which I know they were from a year ago were incorrectly labelled with todays date. Not all images have “Date Taken” stamp.
It would be great if there was an option to just select folders on phone and then to upload straight into specified upload path without changing the format.
Not sure yet if any other information lost like GPS\tagging etc.

Completely agree, files should not be getting renamed by default, should be an option and maybe even configurable.

Fortunately I use a great app for auto renaming all of my photos against a saved template so it does take me seconds to correct, but still, they shouldn’t be getting reamed without my agreement.

Either don’t touch the file name or give the user the option to select the desired action.

I’m disabling this functionality for now until resolved… (yet another Plex Pass “feature” I’ve been forced to disable…)

Please make sure to click “Vote” on the top of this thread.

I can’t believe that this might be really seen as “feature”. Of course I uploaded all photos from my devices manually in the past, which means the filenames were unchanged. I switched to performing the automatic upload with Plex, only to realize now, that it’s a big mess.

CHANGING ORIGINAL FILENAMES without any option to disable this IS A NO-GO!! This makes it impossible to keep overview about what is going on!

I’ll add my voice to this. Please make the renaming an optional feature.
