Am I the only one still using PHT?
I stiill have it installed. But since ino i haave been using uno
Well, to get an image on a TV screen you need soft- and hardware. And the NVIDIA Quadro in my HTPC alone costs more (and has more power) than an AppleTV.
@elan I know Iām late replying but thanks again for keeping HTPC support in Plex for the foreseeable future. Iāve moved into a new space and have gotten rid of ALL my extra streaming sticks and roku ultra setups. Now using only Mac Mini strictly as a HTPC for Plex.
Fun Fact: My kid walks into the room where I have Plex running in TV mode with PMP. As heās use to watching Plex on his Roku, he says WOW is this the new Plex?! This looks way cooler! I said no son, this is the āoldā Plex experience.
HTPC is the way Iām choosing to use Plex for the foreseeable future and hope it is supported long term. Itās a much more enjoyable and high quality experience than any Apple TV or Roku. I myself had almost forgot how superior having a dedicated HTPC is and almost took that for granted. So all Iām saying is #LongLivePlexHTPCās and I encourage users who only use streaming boxes/sticks with Plex to consider the āupgradeā.
Cheers,
Wow, Iāve been out of it for a little while, so I just found out about this āPlex killing off HTPC supportā thing. How horrible would that have been! Talk about avoiding disaster!
I was just imagining having to buy an Apple TV to set next to my mac mini and have them both running to stream shows across my network, just so I can watch movies on my TV. Not exactly what Al Gore had in mind for our cutting back on electricity use.
Hopeful we are done with those shenanigans. Now I just need to find out if Plex Media Player (long live the king) works on Catalina well enough to update my new system I just built. Because Iām understandably waiting on the new Plex app for new features to be introduced.
Just reinstalled windows 10 on new htpc. No app from store and the media player app from download page wont work with my Microsoft RC6 remote control. My Plex pass is up for renewal in next month or so and I wont be renewing it now. I loved Plex over the years but now am parting ways and switched to Emby which works
There does seem to be a conspiracy against the htpc and the 10 foot interface. I have had an HTPC and IR remote for years. Iāve always like the simplicity of one box, controlled from afar. Yes, the Plex live tv and dvr leave something to be desired. While hard to believe that WMC software from 2002 is arguable still better, at least plex tv mode is an option now with the end of support of Windows 7. I would think that Plex would want to capture the WMC users and enhance TV mode with the stated goal of having a unified interface for all sorts of media that could be used comfortably from across the room.
Iāve always used the IR remote because it worked and was familiar, but there is great potential to have phone apps work even better, since pretty much everyone has a phone with them. I have the android app and itās generally good, except like chromecast, it wonāt allow control of live tv. However, there is a hidden āremote controlā function where you can navigate PMP only. It also tends to ādisconnectā from my PMP.
With everyone moving away from the 10 foot interface for windows, the one thing that has saved my windows htpc for now is the only remote I have found specifically made for windows, the Pepper Jobs W10 remote. This has allowed be to make multiple desktop shortcuts in kiosk mode of every streaming service I used utilizing the air mouse function. Regardless, my āgold standardā remains to be able to use the multimedia keys, arrows and other ābuttonsā to navigate plex, but the radio frequency is a nice upgrade to having to point with the IR.
Please Plex, continue the TV mode and work to enhance it (and make the Live TV and DVR function more like WMC). Thanks.
All he is doing here is saying they will keep it on life support until they can convince us that their stupid, completely locked-out streaming devices can replace HTPCs. Itās all in #2, plain as day. They mean to kill HTPC as soon as they can convince the holdouts not to raise a stink. F that.
No need to worry. Emby is getting better every day and Infuse is also a really nice alternative. There is no real need any more to use Plex or any Plex frontend.
