I didn’t have any managed users. Just me. Same thing.
The “telling” of the theory has always been, “The other guys seem to handle this OK.”
Agreed, a self-hosted application needs to be impervious to cloud outages for something as basic as logging in on the local lan… UniFi is a great example of this (being able to log in through the cloud or locally)
I do know it has to do with the authentication. Plex users are not server based, but Plex company based.
However, I have told Plex to trust all users on the LAN, but for some reason Plex the app still can’t figure it out.
Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread. It just shows a weakness in Plex.
I can’t speak for Emby, but Jellyfin, a fork of Emby, does provide that ability. You can also use .nfo files for additional metadata.
Also, Jellyfin is Opensource and freely available with no costs.
And the Jellyfin “developers” removed almost all credits that Emby had in their, at the time, open source code. That is they are taking credit for work done by others without any credit to the original authors. That might not make them thieves but it at least makes them unethical.
I would never use Jellyfin because I do not want to support people that effectively steal other’s thunder.
I came across this thread because I was having a hard time reinstalling Plex Server on new computer. I was unable to get it to find my library. Been tinkering on and off for months, usually giving up because I was frustrated.
I was able to download Emby server, install it, configure it, and add clients to my devices within 15 minutes. The configuration page is a thing of beauty.
Bye Plex!
Just wanted to pop in and say hey. Emby has worked flawlessly. (Except when I forget to turn the machine on. Duh… LOL!) There have been a few older files that have been problomatic, but easily fixed. The server itself runs great.
May I also say something on this topic? My opinion…
I just switched back from Emby to Plex in the last two weeks. I have been using Emby for 1.5 years now, before that I was also using Plex. There are things that could run better on both platforms.
However, I would like to briefly say here why I am going back to Plex.
-
With Plex, more clients are supported. Samsung Tizen OS and PS5 are two systems that Emby can’t handle.
-
The clients at Plex run much more stable. Sure, there are bugs on both sides, but I just have to say Emby really has problems keeping the clients stable. There are sometimes extremely strange errors e.g. on AppleTV at every restart you have to set up the app again, you can no longer get into the app and have to uninstall it, episodes can not be played, you can not skip because everything hangs and then you have to get out and back in etc…
I just find that Plex runs much smoother, more reliable and more stable and just the adjustment of the streams to the edge of the screen is a feature that I miss with emby. With Emby, the app often shuts down if you open it too quickly in succession and then you have to wait a moment until you can connect. -
Plex offers significantly more server and client updates and often faster bug fixes. At least that is my experience. Maybe also because the community is bigger but with Emby it sometimes takes a really long time.
-
Some features like “Watch Together” which I miss a lot in Emby and I like to use very much. New emby also has intro skip but it doesn’t work that perfectly and indexing takes a lot of time and a lot of power.
-
I find the new Discover system extremely cool, where you can find new content, see where you can stream things, what friends are watching, etc. I know that many may not be so enthusiastic but I like it very much and the people with whom I have contact also.
-
Much more possibilities via third party apps, there are many which are compatible with Plex. Tautulli, Prism, Prologue, Varys etc. All very good apps and Emby doesn’t actually have any third party tooles that support it.
-
That brings me to point 7. If you plan on streaming music, audio books, etc., you simply can’t recommend Emby at all. The player is extremely poor and well, it does not work very well. Even Plexamp is much better.
-
I know someone broke into the system at Plex the other day. However, this can happen. However, when you look at security in general, emby is lagging behind. Emby doesn’t even offer 2FA, which is not so good since the server is often shared over the Internet.
These are generally my 8 points why I changed again. Emby is also good, and Emby has its advantages but in general I just have to say Plex offers more.
Thanks for letting me share my opinion ![]()
Did you know that Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, and Kodi all ultimately derive from something “very old” called XBMC? They all forked off a main developmental spine at different points.
Jellyfin, for example, was started by Emby developers themselves. They left the company due to what they saw as significant ethical issues at Emby.
Like @CodeCat5 mentions, all Jellyfin and Emby contributors are still listed — whoever produced the narrative that they were scrubbed may just have not scrolled down. In the codebase itself, anything that hasn’t had to be completely rewritten still bears all the Emby-related naming too.
