Why is a "Direct Connection Unavailable"??

This is infuriating. I have a Windows 10 computer with Plex Media Server. I use an Android phone, or an Android tablet, to Chromecast my media to my TV. I also have an Amazon Fire Stick, with the Plex app installed and linked. All of these things used to work (with an occasional habit of signing out for no seeming reason).

Now, suddenly, none of my devices will play with each other.

My phone and tablet cannot connect to my media server, even though they are all updated, signed in and on the same network. It says “direct connection unavailable”. I am able to relay connect, and play my media (with some reduced performance).

Amazon fire stick app cannot load the media server either.

I’ve tried from the computer to send the programs to the chromecast. I can connect to the chromecast from the computer, but when I try to play anything, it tells me the “media is unavailable”.

There’s no VPN, no firewall issues I can identify. I didn’t change anything, but everything just stopped working.

Any ideas?

Settings - Server - Network - Secure Connections = ‘Disabled’
then restart Plex server

Does this change anything?

Yes, it does. Now I can’t even relay connect.

I am having the same issue as of updating Plex Media Server this afternoon. On Windows 10 64 Bit. Nothing has changed to my setup at all, aside from the PMS update. Now I only get “Direct Connection Unavailable.”

Anyone else?

Did your ISP deploy a router software upgrade recently?

Do you have access to your router’s settings?
Can you change the ‘DNS server’ it uses by default to one of Google’s (8.8.8.8) ?
If the router also provides ‘DNS rebind protection’, can you set an excemption from it for the domain plex.direct ?

Yes. I’ve been having this problem continually since about the same time and have been hoping for it to resolve but still the same. I have reset my modem, updated plex, everything is on the same network, etc. just like mynamesname. This happened suddenly and I am about ready to trash plex. It has worked great until the last few months. How do I simply change it back to original settings to see if that works?

hi i have the same problema now, do you manage to solve it? i think it is realted to the firewall, i have setup my firewall so all traffic in and out from plex app is allowed but nothing change.

I was having the same problem for ages and could not figure it out. Here was the solution:

Under “Settings” > “Server” > “Network” >
“List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”

Add the address that you are having problems with and restart the server.

EDIT: Well that only worked for about a day…
