I cant seem to get anything that shows as EAC3 5.1 to play in surround sound.
Everything I try the receiver is showing it as PCM 2.0. Other types of sound encoding seem to work fine and show Multichannel or DD+ etc.
Is there some way to fix this?
Server Version#: 4.8.4
Player Version#: 7.23.0.13.0.18
As far as audio settings on the Fire TV & Plex app there doesnt seem to be many choices.
On the fire TV audio settings I have it set to Dolby Digital Plus over HDMI (I have tried automatic and just plain Dolby Digital here too)
On the Plex app. Audio boost is off. The only other option I can find is passthrough. I have tried passthrough HDMI and disabled.
As for the LAN. Fire TV is connected direct to router wired and so is the plex server.
I tested the same file using Emby server and it plays it fine as Dolby Digital Plus. Seems to me its maybe using the wrong profile on plex or something?
up_the_buff, only thing that has prevented me from trying out Jellyfin is that it’s so new and I worry about having to chase a whole bunch of bugs down and trying to get the devs to fix them. At least with Plex & Emby (Kodi - Embycon & Embruary), most of them have been worked out already How’s your experience with Jellyfin thus far otherwise?
Im mainly using Jellyfin just for the EAC3 audio files that it refuses to play. I have noticed that straight out of the box Jellyfin doesnt seem to be playing DTS files but I have had no time to look into this. Currently I am running both side by side.
I’d like to ask the author some more about their issue while I’m looking at the logs. After reading the OP again and the followup reply, it looks like an attempt was made to play an EAC3 track but the claim is that the stereo is not showing that.
Two things that I failed to ask or aren’t yet clear:
EAC3 is one name for the compression codec, but there are other names for that same codec, Dolby Digital Plus, DDP, and DD+. So if you’re seeing DD+ on your receiver while trying to play EAC3, that would be correct. Seeing 2CH LPCM like you described would not.
In order to understand what Plex is doing with your hardware, you need to describe everything. The only things we know are that you have a router, a fire stick, and PMS running on something. We have yet to learn the full details about the A/V receiver, the TV, the Firestick, and your speakers, and how they are all connected. It’s completely different if you’re using TOSLINK vs ARC vs HDMI into a receiver etc.
The more details you provide the better.
Looking at the logs you posted, the decision for playback formats seems incomplete in that it doesn’t list what I’m used to seeing, a solid decision along with channels and rate
Nov 17, 2019 17:46:44.344 [16004] DEBUG - Streaming Resource: Reached Decision id=41335 codes=(MDE=1000,Direct play OK.) media=(id=37683 part=(id=37683 decision=direct play protocol=* streams=(Video=(id=30121 decision= width=1920 height=1080) Audio=(id=30122 decision= channels=0 rate=0))))
Because I’m not used to debugging Firesticks, I’m not sure if the channels=0 is an error. I’m guessing it’s a symptom of your issue.
Let’s see if we can get some more details from you if you have time, and I’ll try to inspect what EAC3 does to a Firestick if I’m told what version you have. Because its been a while, we should probably run the latest PMS that’s out.
