plex does not support eac3 5.1 anymore

since the last plex update for amazon fire tv, plex does not support 5.1 eac3 sound anymore. Why are the so often problems with plex updates, it is so annoying!!!

I am glad I’m not the only one having this issue. Others are saying their 5.1 issues were solved with the last update, but not mine and clearly not yours either. I wish they’d fix it. Like you, I am tired of them resolving some issues with updates and seemingly creating more.

EAC3 broken for me too. I just got a Nvidia Shield TV (2017) and Plexpy shows it as direct streaming the episode, but it never plays on the shield, it just hangs and sometimes crashes the app altogether.

Edit: stopped the server. Deleted the contents of the “codecs” folder. Restarted. Now it plays EAC3 fine… strange

@Blizzaro
for me disabling Auto passthrough helped.

Disabling auto passthrough does not work on FireTV Stick.

Thank you for this tip, fixed my problems as well.

had same issue could not play eac3, shut it down and renamed codex directory. After restarting video played, it looks like it redownloaded the codex as the codex folder was recreated with new files.

Looking at the supported audio codec for PLEX, it looks like EAC3 is only supported for mp4 file containers…

support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203824396-What-media-formats-are-supported-

I think this only talking about the PLEX apps for XBOX One, but I have also seen some discussion regarding the removal of EAC3 support for other systems…

I have this happening with episodes of the grand tour (The.Grand.Tour.S02E05.1080p.WEB.h264-SKGTV) that have E-AC-3 audio. stopping plex, removing the codecs folder and restarting Plex did not help - streaming via a 2017 Shield TV, audio is still transcoded.

Damn, so I guess if you’re on Plex Cloud, like myself, one is unable to solve this issue because we can’t access any PMS Data…?

I bloody love you! Been pulling my hair out at the constant buffering circle on Xbox one and then bought a Roku and had the same issue. About to give up and tried deleting the codec folder and worked straight away. A life saver!

Is the codecs folder the one on the server? I’m running a Windows plex server, and a Shield tv which has that problem.

Deleting the Codec file fixed the issue for me as well. Thank YOU!

Also, fyi, the file does get regenerated with proper settings (fixing what ever was wrong) after it is removed - so not much of a need to back it up before deleting.

Yes, this folder is found on the server.

I just tried to play a EAC3 5.1 + H264 video in my nvidia shield. It was a pain in the ass,
1Âş try : google cast , video fast fowarding and no sound
2Âş try : plex app on nvidia shield , video ok but no sound
3Âş try : asking plex to convert to 720p @4mbps , sound and video ok but just for a few seconds and than the app shows an error message.

In the last two attempts my nvidia shield was constantly displaying an annoying and slow black screen between all changes i made

Turns out i gave up and watched the video on my iPad in the tv room.

Very frustrating. Why plex dosen’t shows a message of incompatible codec when i added the file in the library??? It would save me 30 min of time wasting :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Have this issue with fire TV stick, eac3 5.1
Video plays but output is in stereo.

If I turn on convert it seems to give 5.1 but my server can’t handle the conversion

Ran into this today. Tried transcoding to lower quality, same. Tried moving Codecs dir to Codecs.bak, restarted Plex and still saw the problem. Compared the two dirs and saw EasyAudioEncoder-141-freebsd-x86_64 in both. Also saw EasyAudioEncoder-133-freebsd-x86_64 still in the old Codecs.bak folder. Moved everything back and deleted EasyAudioEncoder-141-freebsd-x86_64, then DID NOT restart Plex and it worked! It looks like 141 reinstalled, so not sure about future playbacks.
