Fire TV: Doesn't play videos with EAC3 7.1

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654
Player Version#: 9.15.38159

Fire TV Stick 4k Max
Fire OS Version: 7.6.2.4

Fire TV Audio setting: Best Available
My AVR that the Fire is connected to supports all audio formats

Burn Subtitles: Automatic
Passthrough HDMI
Plex Refresh Rate Switching ON
Resolution Switching Off
Allow Insecure Always
H264 Max Level: 5.2 (Recommended)

When playing a file with EAC3 7.1 track, the video doesn’t play at all. Pause/Play doesn’t do anything. Scrobbling doesn’t do anything. The video is just a black screen. logs.txt (41.1 KB)

If I set Plex Refresh Rate Switching OFF, then playback just causes a crash:

02-17 12:18:26.155 e: [ExoPlayer][EventLogger] playerFailed [eventTime=3.74, mediaPos=0.00, window=0, period=0, errorCode=ERROR_CODE_AUDIO_TRACK_INIT_FAILED
  com.google.android.exoplayer2.r: MediaCodecAudioRenderer error, index=3, format=Format(1, null, null, audio/eac3, eac3, 0, english, [-1, -1, -1.0], [8, 48000]), format_supported=YES

logs.txt (5.2 KB)

Then:

  • Plex Refresh Rate Switching On
  • Fire Surround Sound > DDP or DD

Makes no difference.

Then, I changed the settings again:

  • Plex Refresh Rate Switching On
  • Fire Surround Sound > PCM

This time the file plays back fine (Direct Play) but my AVR only receives stereo PCM.

Fire TV supports DDP 7.1 passthrough so this seems like a Plex issue.

@ChuckPa mind taking a look please?

Btw 9.16 doesn’t seem to work either.

I’m observing this as well.

Pretty old issue but it doesn’t just affect Plex AFAIK: [HELP] eAC3 Audio Playing Video Frozen

Hi, seems to be the same problem I am having. As a workaround, test other audio settings, as outlined in this thread:
