Why is Plex transcoding FLAC to AC3?

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457-77cb9455c.x86_64 (CentOS 7)
Player Version#: 7.28.0.15501 (Android 8.0.0, Sony Bravia)

I’ve discovered that my PMS is transcoding multi-channel (5.1) FLAC audio to AC3 when playing videos on my Sony Bravia TV. Anyone have any idea why in the world it’s doing this, and how I can persuade it to simply send the FLAC audio to my receiver over the HDMI ARC?

You can send FLAC in a video container over ARC.

Awesome! How do I get Plex to do it, because today the PMS is transcoding the lossless FLAC audio to lossy AC3.

You can’t, it’s a limitation of ARC, not Plex.

Do you know of anything that lists the audio formats that can be sent over ARC?

EDIT: I found this. I had no idea that ARC was so limited, compared to “regular” HDMI. Looks like I’ll be in the market for a dedicated streaming device sooner than I anticipated.
