Why is the Alexa skill geofenced?

I’m a life long plex pass holder. Love the system, when announced Plex made a skill to operate it by voice, I (over)paid to purchase an American Echo, until recently I was happily talking away from show to show, and boom. Amazon announces it’s coming to Canada, and now there is a geofence around the plex skill. May I ask why? Unlike Netflix Plex deals with local content, so it’s not a licensing issue. So far from this standpoint, crippling early adopters is really taking the piss.

Can we expect as Canadians to be able to use our Plex services with Alexa, or will you make us jump through hoops like Netflix does? Echo was so much better before coming here natively. What is the time line to click the check mark to re enable the skill, we all know it works in Canada, as is.?

Same issue for me as a German. When we can expect that the Alexa Skill works for us? In worst case I can also live with just an English version of Plex on Alexa if this is only a translation issue.

Good question.

German I could understand, seeing you need an entirely different language model, not that it’s an excuse, if you’re telling the world your software works with Alexa, it should work in all markets Alexa is offered in. English is totally ridiculous, in Canada we speak the same English language as our American neighbours, I live in Ontario, I’m more ‘in the states’ than Montana. It’s not like an entirely new voice model is needed for Canadian english, and I don’t care about Quebecois Francais. It sucks because there isn’t even a method (at least known to me) to sideload a perfectly working skill. Seems like a real slight to your Canadian fan base. I guess I’ll try docker out and try to get Phlex working.

Thanks for the swift reply. Oh wait, Plex has yet to reply.

Would be great to get an answer to the question “When do we get the Alexa skill in Germany available?”

Team Plex? Hello?

c’mere Barkley, cmon!! tell the bosses to reenable the Alexa skill for non US residents.

It wasn’t Plex that stopped it. Amazon changed how Alexa works in Canada. We’ve summited the skill to be included in Canada, just waiting for Amazon to approve it.

PS. We didn’t know ahead of time that they were going to do this. It caught is by surprise too.

Thank You for your reply,

Agreed Amazon dropped the ball on this one, if I sounded harsh in my initial question, apologies. It was shortly after I had ordered 3 for Canada for friends and family, when my US dot became retarded, it showed I had a plex skill but all skills were disabled until either I vpn’d in at the router, or changed the echo to Canada, and so far like all Canadian app stores, it’s extremely lacking in its skills.

Thank you for assuring me the skill is coming to Canada, it worked slick which is why I got echos for friends and family.

No regrets getting a pass, this software is sweet.

Cheers,
Ray

Any update on this MovieFan.Plex?

Any progress report from Amazon to enable Plex for Echo? I’ve already sent three Echos out for Christmas based on my US Echo experience. Until the skill works, Echo is just an expensive paperweight. How long does it take to approve a checkbox for Canada?
