Why is there a "NEWS" Library on my Plex Android App now?

Please allow me to disable this. It’s right at the top and I keep clicking it, and it starts playing right away with sound! Not liking this at all :frowning:

Then to stop “clicking it” is the answer surely?

I wish. It’s right next to the home key. All I ask is the option to hide it under channels, or better still, disable it altogether. Surely that is not too much to ask.

Don’t worry… Soon it’s going to be part of a new feature. The home screen. aka, Right in your face screen

yes, but Channels has a valid, logical function, it’s Plex’s version of plug-ins, and there are many plugins available and in use by the Plexcommunity. I do agree that it should be able to be hidden for users who don’t have use for it.

So in you opinion, News is not valid but Channels are valid. Hmm… the only point I want to make here is. Who are you to decide what is valid? Who am I to decide what is valid?

The ability to hide what each individual user does not use is a longstanding request here. If/When Plex honors this request, there will be rejoicing in the streets (except by the professional complainers).

It’s ‘valid’ because the use of plugins has been part of the framework since the early days, and a lot of plugins have active development and various users.

Pushing a new, big ‘feature’ (with ads and which only seems to serve American content) without any form of consent or user polling is something else in my opinion.

I won’t use it, because, you’re right, nobody is holding a gun to my head. I don’t really care whether it’s on my dashboard or not, honestly. My gripe is that this feature wasn’t requested by anyone to my knowledge, it serves primarily to satisfy investors and stuff pockets, and it’s a clear indication that development resources are not being directed toward feature-completeness for existing functionality but inclusion of a bunch of garbage that doesn’t serve the end-user (and which the end-user can’t disable). Have fun using this feature while hardware encoding sits on the back-burner, sync is broken on Android, you can’t use more than one HDHomeRun for Live TV/DVR, and Live TV isn’t rolled out to 75% of clients…

This is a good point. Plex could do itself a huge favor by being transparent about its development priorities and fostering discussion with/receiving feedback from its user-base, rather than just springing things on us and pretending it’s the best thing since sliced bread.

We’re left to speculate about the value of and motivation behind this type of inclusion, primarily because none of us knew it was coming or had a chance to give an opinion and receive feedback until it was on our dashboards.

Good news everyone. Just found a post from elan at the plex reddit and he posted:

Just chatted with that team, and there are no settings at the moment on that app, because they aren’t displaying any News content on the home screen. However, they (and all apps) will be able to turn off the top-level News item, as we realize not everyone wants to even see that word  (tl;dr; we were hoping to lump that work into some other customization, but now the News piece might come first)

Isn’t it just great that in order to get an official comment on a thread in the Plex Forum you have to go to Reddit

So @elan , “Release Early, Release Ugly” is still the name of the game. You have once again pushed upon us an unfinished new feature. How long will we have to wait for the finishing touches this time?

Well, good. I just hope it’s from the Admin account and not per managed user. It won’t help much if a kid can active the news feed and s-e-x/drugs/war/politics starts popping up.
ARE YOU F-ing JOKING. The word S E X is censored?

I’m gonna make my own account a managed account I think so I won’t be bothered by news.

Don’t click it if you don’t want to watch it! It is really that simple, it’s not like the videos are on the front page with on deck. A bunch of entitled people complaining over absolutely nothing.

First the news, next porn. Who knows.
And you say the front page with on deck. It’s coming. You can’t advertise if nobody sees it.

They are on the front page… You have to disable the row… But it still leaves the library there… We pay for this software so ya we are entitled.

I would hope that the development teams for each client/service are different; so the team developing the News feature are not the same ones developing the Android client or the TV/DVR client etc. This way no other client is affected by a new feature being developed.

Hmm jet another, useless feature comes out, before the 1 year old bug, sync. Music stopping on android devices. Had enough, moving on to emby. Disappointed life time user. Should saved my money.

This is my issue as well. I don’t want my 4 year old daughter watching disgusting news videos about our idiot leadership in America or other horrifically inappropriate videos! Why on earth would I be subjected to NEWS in a MEDIA app? I am appalled by this and quite frankly, offended.

I just wants Music to work. I am getting really tired of having to restart a stream simply because I move from WiFi to cellular or vice versa. That is a fundamental feature.

I have paid for 4 lifetime licenses and I deeply regret it.

This is a ridiculous feature and clearly a money-grab. The privacy policy changes last month made me less inclined to look for other options than this does. Live TV/DVR still has a long way to go, and now they act like it’s time to move on to the next big thing and spring this crap on us that literally nobody asked for. I use Live TV/DVR primarily to consume news on CBS and PBS, but this really confirms that we’re headed in the wrong direction.

The problem here (for me, and I can only comment on my opinion) is that I have Plex for my 4 year old daughter, and my 9 and 13 year old niece/nephew and they do NOT need to see this (disgusting) news crap in their Plex app. The Plex app is so wonderful because I can restrict each user to specific things to watch and have, but I can not remove unwanted News about murder, our insane moronic president in America, or lost kids, and all the other stuff 4 year old kids don’t need to watch!

I am appalled by this, and while no one is “forcing” us to watch it, my little 4 year old always knew that Cartoons was the first one on the top to watch. This is unfair.

I sincerely hope someone with some authority sees what @“Kyle Verry” just said.

Agreed… there should be an “off” or “hide” for the news tab.

I think this and the other couple recent changes is a telling sign of how much they really care about us users. We are paychecks, until those paychecks slow down or stop they are probably going to continue to implement more “features” that we don’t want.
