Why is video jumping with PMS on Synology NAS?

My setup is that I have a Synology NAS DS418Play with PMS installed. I want to stream BluRay content to devices in my home. The NAS has its supplied Ethernet cable plugged into my router. My desktop PC, in the same room, is also plugged into my router via another cable.

I have the movie Argo in a MKV container. According to Plex, it’s 1080p (H.264) and no subtitles. When I try to play this on my PC’s Chrome browser, I can see the NAS CPU briefly spike and then fall to more normal levels. But every 5-7 seconds, the movie skips a second during playback.

For Web Client - Quality, I have “Automatically Adjust quality” and “Use recommend settings” checked. Video quality dropdown is set to Maximum. “Play smaller videos at original quality” isn’t set. I’ve tried changing these but it doesn’t seem to help.

For Transcoder, quality is set to Automatic. I tried “Make my CPU hurt” but it didn’t help. The second set of logs should include my attempts to change Transcoder settings.

Do the logs reveal what’s causing the jumpiness in playback? Are there additional settings I can try to smooth this out?

I tried getting a Plex Pass, wondering if HW transcoding would help. But I’m still seeing playback that skips. I’ve attached a fresh set of logs; see 11/18/2019 around 9 PM - I’m attempting to watch Argo. Can anyone help debug why I’m seeing choppy playback?

From what I can see, PMS isn’t picking up on HW transcoding being present.

Did you restart the server after activating the Plex pass on this account?

Also, did you go to Setings - Server - Transcoder - Show Advanced and enable it?

I just tried restarting Plex and it didn’t help. Further, I did confirm Use HW Acceleration is checked. Also please note I just did this but the log snippet you showed is from two days ago. I’m using Manage -> Troubleshooting to provide logs; I’ve attached a new copy.

Is this in a docker container or VM ?
I ask because the hardware isn’t showing (notice the TPU lines) but the CPU has the ability.

For the repro, the playback is happening in Chrome (Version 78.0.3904.97 (Official Build) (64-bit)) on a desktop PC that’s also on my network.

Docker? VM ?

The J3355 CPU has the QSV ASIC but it’s not being detected. VMs and Containers are the most common abstraction which obscures it from being seen.

I am not running the browser in a docker container or VM. The only thing I can think of is I may have a Hyper-v Ethernet adapter in windows despite not running or using a VM. Could the hyper-v Ethernet adapter have impact here?

Hyper-V should not be involved with anything on the Synology Server aspect.

So my NAS just has PMS running; no hyper-V. On my win 10 desktop, I’m just running Plex client in a browser; no VMs are running.

Hyper-V comes into the picture since, on windows client, when I go to settings -> Ethernet -> change adapter options, I see multiple items listed. Some are Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet adapters.

Ah, so you are seeing the virtual adapters for your Hyper-V guests.
In this context, they aren’t worth mentioning. They only add confusion.

I would like you to get the PuTTy app so you can log into the Synology.

Using PuTTy, sign into your Synology and arrive at the command line prompt
type: ls -la /dev/dri
We should see something like this:

Let it play for 20 seconds.
Stop playback.
Wait 30 second for logs to settle.
Settings - Settings - Troubleshooting - Download Logs.

Attach that zip.

Let’s get harsh with it:

SSH into it again
sudo -su root
cd /dev/dri
chmod 666 *

Now retest.

If this works, I know where the problem is.

Just tried it but problem still occurred. I did restart Plex in PMS. Still testing with Argo as the film.

BTW, is it an issue that in your ls -la output, the renderD128 entry is tied to the render group, but it’s tied to the video group for me?

This is just messed up.

Uninstall the package.
Restart DSM.
Install PMS.
Try it again.

I ask this because when the installer runs, I setup the video group right before finishing the installation.

Tried those steps but still repro’ing the problem. Playback was around 9:52.
