Why isn't Plex using TVDB to name Three Stooges episodes?

I have named the folders and episodes how you are supposed to but Plex names every episode The Three Stooges Collection - Years 1 & 2 instead of the actual episode title. It does get the episode number and description right. I’ve looked and the TVDB names the episodes correctly.

I think I figured it out. You can delete if you want or leave this up for informational purposes. The title field in the description of the file is usually left blank when I rip episodes of something, but it automatically got filled in with The Three Stooges Collection - Years 1 & 2.

Update: I give up. I’ve tried removing the titles from the descriptions, moving the files to a location Plex doesn’t monitor, then emptying trash and cleaning bundles before moving the files back to my Plex monitored folder. It just keeps naming those episodes The Three Stooges Collection - Years 1 & 2. Thankfully I only had 7 episodes done when I caught this issue. I do wish there was a way to make Plex forget that the files at one time had The Three Stooges Collection - Years 1 & 2 in the title of the file description.

as for the “Plex Dance”, it appears you missed a step which could have resulted in some of the wrong/old information to survive…
steps should be:

  1. move the files outside of Plex’ scope
  2. scan the library for updates
  3. empty trash (/ clean bundles)
  4. return the files to their old location – make sure names / folder structure are correct; in your particular case, have the embedded title removed
  5. scan the library for updates

As an alternative approach… you can set the priority of the agents used by TheTVDb.com agent to use local media (incl. embedded metadata) last or to ignore it completely (if you don’t use local media assets). This should stop Plex from using the embedded title/album.

This will include external subtitle files as well.

Thanks for all the help. Doing all the steps of the dance failed to work so I got frustrated and told it to ignore local media assets. Of course, the subtitles on my movies became unavailable, so I ended up moving the local media agent down the priority list on everything and that seems to have worked so far. I wish there was a way to tell it to only ignore embedded titles while using other local media assets. Anyway I won’t make the mistake of failing to remove embedded titles in the future before transferring the files to my Plex library folders.

No kidding. Mashing them together sucks.
