Why isn't the optimizer part of the DVR?

Why can’t I set shows to record and then have them optimized down to SD or to Hevc on a show to show basis? Some shows like Lucifer I want in HD but reality shows that the family wants doesn’t need to be when SD would be fine. More importantly, why can’ t I have the optimizer automatically deleted the original file? These features seem like a no brainer yet I see not talk of implementing them. I know I can use post processing to do it, and I take advantage of that for comskip but seeing as transcoding is already built in why can’t I use it? Having to run handbrake on top of plex seems silly.

Once a show is recorded and in your library, you can use the Media Optimizer feature as you would with any media. In Plex Web, for example, just hover your mouse over the poster art and click the 3 gray dots in the bottom right corner, then click Optimize. This feature wasn’t intended to replace your media, but to add pre-transcoded optimized versions to reduce in-the-moment transcoding in scenarios where users who frequently use devices for playback requiring transcoding and don’t want the added cycles.

You can read more on Media Optimizer here.

I know how to use it, I am asking why it isnt part of the DVR now. Why can’t I set it to automatically optomize my DVR recordings while deleting the original? You guys already did the work building the feature, might as well open it up to work with the DVR.

It would be incredibly useful and all you need to do is make a tick box that allows deleting the original and forget the intended purpose…

Something similar to what you’re asking for already exists as an advanced option. In Plex Web go to Settings -> Live TV & DVR and then click on the orange gear next to your tuner. Device Settings will appear and you can set “convert video while recording” to transcode. This will reduce the file sizes and improve compatibility across player devices.

Yes, I am asking for ganular control and have it transcoded to mp4. If you add a delete button to the optimizer than we can do things like every show to mp4 but one show can be transcoded down to SD and another can stay HD. The idea that I need to call upon handbrake to do this when you already have a transcode built in is a bit silly.

There is no reason that in the options of the show they can’t be an option to transcode to desired resolution based on the show it automatically and delete the mpeg2. You guys already have the transcode built, just need a way for the DVR to use it.

Gotcha. I’m happy to pass the suggestion along to provide more granular control in DVR. This is more of a prioritization thing, rather than what’s possible and not possible. This sounds like a fine idea, but there are also other feature requests being worked on with high demand from the community, in addition to some high priority issues being investigated. Thanks again for your feedback.

Yeah, I wouldn’t expect an immediate turn around on this. It just seems like an easy thing to do to add a lot of use to a feature that is already built.

Thanks.

Just searched and found this, but add me to the list as a +1 for this option. I would like to use the optomizer to convert all of my dvr recordings to the highest quality 720p setting in the optomizer and deleter the original ( or do it on the fly). While I am capable of looking into handbrake and running a custom post processing script this all seems like it shouldn’t be necessary…

I have wondered the same thing at times. The setting @kinoCharlino is referring to should be just for LiveTV (and hence realtime) but the media optimizer would serve as an asynchronous lower priority task to convert things recorded to the specified format. I do this via MCEBuddy right now but it would be nice if I could do it via media optimizer (I do realize MCEBuddy does a lot of custom things and I am not suggesting feature parity here)

Another +1 here! I requested something very similar here before coming across this thread.

Just stumbled across this again, just wondering if this is on the radar at all to be added at some point?
