why sometimes the shared library from my sons PLEX buffers so much

My son shared his library with us and he recently added some converted home movies. They are almost impossible to watch as they buffer every 10 seconds for about 10-15 seconds.

This cannot be answered in a solid manner without knowing

  1. what is the exact format of these files?

  2. on what type of device is the Plex server hosted on? Particularly: what type of CPU is used?

  3. you can determine yourself by calling up the Plex XML info of one of the files

  4. only your son can provide this information

What are you trying to watch with - What Device/Client?
What are the Remote Quality Settings in that Plex App on the Client Device?
(Ideally your Remote Quality Setting wants to be faster than the file’s contents for Direct Play)
(Otto’s XML info will let us know what the files are made of)
Does the Son have the upload bandwidth to deliver the files in Direct Play (full sized/without a transcode)?
Is the Son throttling outbound material - forcing the server to transcode files that could be delivered Direct Play?
Do you have the download bandwidth to receive Direct Play files (providing your client device can Direct Play them)?

Lots of stuff going on here…
