Bare with me as i’m not the most technologically literate person. I have a WD NAS running my Plex media server. I have shared my library with four individuals who each have their own plex accounts. Two of these people can watch just fine. One using the Plex app on their LG tv and the other on his PC. The two who get constant buffering are using apple tv and a fire stick. I just want to make sure there is nothing on my end i need to correct. Any settings I should check?
I have had numerous issues with buffering in the past, and there is a wide range of causes and solutions. Are they trying to “Direct Play”? this is a file copy with no buffer, any hiccups in network will impact this. It could also be down to the file type and what the client can handle. You also have to look at see what file size the movie is and what the server is allowing to be streamed.
In my server I used to have a cap of 4Mb/s 720, as that’s what I could handle…i’ve since upgraded some hardware and connectivity and now they use 8Mb/s 1080.
You should also set the buffer in the server settings. I have mine at 320, this builds a healthy buffer, but will run the CPU for a bit longer to do this.
I leave Direct Play at auto and it’s fine for smaller TV shows, but for movies I find it too choppy, so if you only have a few clients and your server can handle the work, instead of Direct Play on Auto, try to set it to disable.
