Why transcode liveTV

Hi

I live in Denmark, and have CableTV available through my HDHR Extend. Why does Plex Server transcode the liveTV stream for my IOS clients when its perfectly viewable “as is” directly from the tuner? I can use VLC on my iphone to view LiveTV directly from the HDHR with no transcoding.
Is it purely a bandwidth concern (for when i’m not on internal Wifi), or is it for some other reason?

There were some issues with direct playing live TV in some circumstances for iOS. In this release, all live TV is transcoded, but the team is working to refine that, and direct play or direct stream where they can. :slight_smile:
