Will a raspberry pi 4 pass atmos to fire tv cube?

I have a raspberry pi 4 running plex media server. I have plex set up on my Fire TV Cube. Will that setup be able to pass the atmos from files on my Pi to my Fire TV?

The limitation is the FireTV and the devices to which it is attached.

There are two types of Atmos for home theaters: Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos, which is used by Netflix, etc services; and TrueHD + Atmos, which is found on Blu-ray discs.

The Cube will pass Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos to the attached equipment if the equipment supports that format.

FireTV devices do not support passthrough for TrueHD audio. It will be transcoded to a supported format. The Atmos information will be lost during the transcode.

The only off the shelf Plex client that will passthrough TrueHD + Atmos audio is a Nvidia Shield.

Would I have to use the Shield TV Pro or would the new Shield TV work (the tube looking one)?

Go with the Pro.

Users have reported issues with the Plex app on the tube model. Plex is aware, but not sure they have all the kinks worked out yet. Search the forum for “shield tube” or similar to see the reports.

Cool, thanks. Now I just have to wait for the Pro’s to get back in stock
