MovieFan.Plex - Please update us if the developers think this will work or if it won’t work. I’d rather take the official updates than go through the hassles that rooting could bring.
Thanks!
Same here. The fact that rooting will erase PMS metadata makes me wait - recreating manually few thousands home/private videos is something I’d like to avoid. But as many others I’m pretty close to breaking point on my 16G Shield with space constraints being a daily reality.
this change would help me a lot. Bought the 2017 version with 16GB with 256GB SSD and the SSD is now useless. My movies are on plex but when I add my music to the Shield disk gets full and Shield crashes.
I am of course talking about only the metadata, the movies and music files are on my NAS
Given how prominently Plex has featured the Nvidia Shield (promoted it, really), I think it’s extremely unfortunate that the 16GB model comes with this rock-hard upper limit; “If your library is too big, the app will become unstable and we don’t offer an official solution… ¯\(ツ)/¯ Sorry!”. Having just bought the 16GB model and discovering this limitation after the fact, I am, for the first time, disappointed by Plex.
I tried to figure out what migrating from an old Mac Mini to the Shield would entail, so I came across this page titled Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD but even here, the only warning about this defect, is this vague and ambiguous note:
Note: The server’s data directory will always be placed on the original internal storage, even if you expand it with a USB drive or microSD card.
You could, of course, argue that I should have connected the dots after reading that, but I didn’t and I’m sure I won’t be the last to make that mistake. I’m also sure a lot of people have bought the Shield never even being aware of the article. So, the very least they could’ve done, is to clearly state the limitation in no uncertain terms: Adopted storage cannot be used for the PMS meta data library and the internal storage on the shield cannot be simply expanded. When internal storage is full, it’s full, and there is nothing you can do save for a fairly complicated procedure involving rooting the Shield.
Plex, I love you and I think you do great things, but please. This needs to be fixed. Featuring the Shield in promotional emails and on your site while this remains unsolved, reflects poorly on you. I hope that an official solution will be provided soon so that users with large libraries can also use the Shield.
When I understand the discussion correctly it seems that it is possible to place the plex on the adopted storage but that it involves rooting and other technical interventions that often lead to unstable system in the future. But it shows that it is technically feasible to place Plex on adopted storage. It would be nice to know if Plex is working on this.
Let’s not joke about it: root has nothing to do with any system unstability!
Infatct, I run a rooted Shield and I moved PMS to the external storage and never had a problem.
They just want you to buy the most expensive Shield model with its old fashioned spinning HDD.

Wouldn’t it make more sense then, to do as I suggested, and spell out the limitation rather than people buying the 16GB model and finding out about it afterwards? If your (conspiracy) theory is true, they’re going about this in a very clumsy way.

Of course they should do what you suggested!
And they could also change the app manifest in order to let user to install PMS on adopted storage

Is rooting it not difficult with future upgrades of Android?
Hi all.
I would like to chip in.
I got 16gb Shield with plex running for couple of weeks.
After initial set up I have added all my media folders including photos, that is:
23000 photos
20 music albums
70 movies
2200 TV shows
All together with default set up took 2.5gb of internal storage. After googling and gather all the info I have cleared all plex data and started from scratch.
My set up now has only movies and TV shows. Before setting up the libraries I remove all agents apart of plex ones, unticked thumbnails, music themes and added subtitles agent. After scanning and adding metadata it’s only 700mb used for 2270 items.
Looking at my storage in total I have about 7gb free to use with all aps and OS.
Using simple math I could add about 23000 items to my libraries, is that right or I’m missing something?
If above is right there is no chance for me to get even close to this number.
problem is I think mainly in music. I have several series as well as 600 movies and they fit no problem in the 16GB. When I added music however it went wrong. I have about 1TB of music and this leads to too much meta data.
Hey guys,
some words from my experiences. I did the tutorial and i use an 512GB SSD in an USB 3.0 external drive. The whole Plex runs on it and furthermore i moved my Dolphin and Retroarch to it.
I love how it runs. Its smooth and it playes my 4K movies from my NAS via Ethernet like a god!
At the last i can stream (direct play) and transcode it to other Clients.
I hope they will integrate it in the setup that i never need to root etc. my device! But it works very well!
Why don’t you people use kodi? I use kodi and connect to Plex server using upnp and no longer have problems. I’ve been doing this for 3 weeks with zero problems on my 16gb nvidia shield. I have 160 movies on my external hard drive and everyone in the house is viewing them. Had to tweak a few things but videos run flawlessly.
System Apps can’t be moved to adoptable storage. That’s an OS limitation and we can’t do anything about it. If you root the device, then you can do it, of course, but at the expense of breaking things if the adopted storage gets removed. In the case of our App specifically, as it’s not vital for the device to run, there will probably be no issues.
We’re studying other approaches to support this though.

This is good to know. Hopefully a official method can be achieved! Dont mind having my device rooted ATM to have the hole Plex install on adoptive storage, But would prefer a official method.
Something similar to how Kodi or RetroArch manage their data would be ideal, By keeping install data hidden in system, But metadata & so on on sdcard\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb. Also this way, We could backup our own setup manually & potentially use plugins if that data was moved there too

You do not understand the problem. If you run Kodi connected to a Plex server you will still experience the problem. 150 moves is not going to show the problem. When you get up to hundreds of movies and hundreds of tv shows you will run out of main storage because all your movies metadata is stored on the main 16 Gig space.
