Will PMS ever allow Plex data on adopted storage? YES!!

Is rooting it not difficult with future upgrades of Android?

Just updated to 6.3 preview and it worked as expected (just had to re-root after the system update).

why not wait for the developer images to be availalbe?

Notice in the Nvidia forum one of the Staff said this is coming soon. Of course soon can mean anything.

To all of you, who made it work: what storage did you use?
I have a corsair flash drive that is on nvidia’s approved list, but as adopted speed it’s not fast as I want (80/mbs read, 20/mbs write). Moving PMS works, but scanning and refreshing metadata takes ages and the whole thing feels sluggish, compared to when it’s on internal storage
I’m thinking about getting an SSD+enclosure and installing PMS there.

I think he was referring to this post.

Did anyone manage to update to 6.3 and restore their PMS?

I backed up /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb but totally forgot about /mnt/expand/longstoragecode/user/0/com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb so I’ve re-installed

I know restoring a Plex Server can be troublesome in general so can’t say whether it would’ve worked but maybe in this environment you could just clone it.

yooo what’s taking so much time to implement this?

Jeez it’s two years and the devs are spinning their thumbs on this.
What a way to disregard your customers’ preferences.

Can we get it done, pretty please?

What a way to disregard your customers’ preferences.

I would argue that this is about more than preferences. I simply cannot use Plex on my Shield 16 GB connected to a NAS as a music- or photo library because of the storage-limitations. To add insult to injury, the limitations are only hinted at in Plex’s own docs, even on the very unambigously titled “Limitations When Running Plex Media Server on NVIDIA SHIELD”-page under the “Server Data Requirements”-heading.

The last we heard from a Plex official was 26. of January:

We’re studying other approaches to support this though.

At least keep the community updated on this without pointing your finger at Nvidia and saying “we can’t do anything about it”. That simply isn’t good enough when you are then ones who have been promoting the Shield. Take some responsibility and get a fire lit under this!

Emby Media server for Android has come along way & is pretty solid. Have been able to install to adoptive storage since testing started, Which has been around 3+ months I believe.

Its quite obvious that Nvidia & Plex made one hell of a deal to have Plex bundled as a part of the stock Nvidia Shield Tv Android firmware being pre-installed on EVERY Nvidia shield Tv, Which is fine & thats just business. But to force people to either buy a 500GB model for such a basic features nowadays that work just fine on a 16GB model with Adoptive Storage (FACT), In 2018
 Is shady business IMO!!!

Plex & Nvidia say Adoptive Storage is coming or they are looking into it
 I call shenanigans

I tried to use the Sync feature for the first time yesterday. Am I correct to assume that this won’t work until Adoptive Storage is implemented? (due to lack of space for transcoding in SHIELD 16GB).

Add me (as of today) to the list of successful PMS installs on my newly rooted 2015 16GB Shield. PMS and all movie, tv show, music, and photo metadata is on the 128GB USB solid state flash drive.

Movies and tv always worked for me before the adopted storage PMS install (less than 1000 objects) but multiple past attempts at adding photos and music (many 10s of thousands of objects) would always consume the 16GB and render the Shield useless.

I just followed the instructions in the links posted on this forum thread. First ever Android root. If I can do it - so can you. Seems like a lot of work to essentially just allow me to choose my PMS install location outside of the 16GB internal storage. No matter - it works great now. Thumbnails and menus seem to pop a little faster than before as a bonus.

SanDisk SDCZ880-128G-G46 Extreme PRO 128GB USB 3.1 Solid State Flash Drive Amazon.com

Advertised as “read speeds of up to 420MB/s and write speeds of up to 380MB/s”. Whatever I’m really getting, everything seems snappier - especially with photos thumbnails.

However - it’s almost $80 so you’re fast approaching Shield Pro price territory (with almost 4x more storage) if you don’t have one laying around (I did).

I have a 2017 Shield TV 16gb and a 2015 Shield TV Pro. The Pro is painfully slow compared to the 16gb model. Then I installed a 500gb SSD into the Shield TV Pro and now it’s just as fast as the 16gb (night and day difference). If you are rooting your 16gb model to install Plex onto that USB stick than IMO you’ve got a way better setup than a Shield TV Pro.

Have any of you had to repeatedly run through the PMS setup menus after restarting the Shield?

“You have a Plex Media Server on this device” after every restart. I uncheck create default libraries and click thru the 2 or three screens and all is well and all my metadata is still there. I try starting Plex via settings/apps/pms to give the USB stick time to activate (as mentioned in the guide) but no joy.

Minor annoyance but annoying just the same.

Thx.

Renamed server friendly name from setup in browser and problem went away. Must be a first time switch that didn’t get flipped off.

I agree with @erwinfj completely. When I started this thread I was frustrated and that lead to impatience resulting in my purchasing a Pro unit just to get PMS working (I sold the 16GB unit for a small loss). The hybrid SSHD in the Pro makes it slow, especially booting. When the warranty period clocked over I purchased a Samsung 500GB SSD and switched out the SSHD, and now it boots at least as fast as the 16GB, but the final result would be no better than using the 16GB model with PMS assets on adopted storage. Hopefully PMS will support this as a standard feature in the near future so that rooting is not required and, given that nVidia have announced the discontinuance of the Pro model, I’d stick with the 16GB model. Life’s full of such lessons

How did you replace with an SSD? Did you need to still root the device to use the updated storage?

Considering going down this path or just buying a dedicated server and using the shield as a client (used Xeon box to run all my other docker services, and potential future home security system).

Thanks, Andrew

Hi @“Andrew Barbaccia”, no rooting required in my case. I have a SATA dual docking station with clone functionality (Volans VL-DS30) so I shutdown the Shield, extracted the SSHD and put it into slot 1, placed the SSD into slot 2 and pressed the clone button. Some time later (maybe 30-40 minutes - wasn’t around to see it finish) it had finished, so I inserted the SSD into the Shield and booted up. Worked perfectly. Here in Australia the Samsung 500GB SSD cost about $200 so that is a consideration. If you are going to purchase a server for other purposes and you intend to keep it powered up then maybe that would be a less expensive alternative to run the PMS. Blueskies, Paul

You only had to clone it? No other fancy scripts or anything? I’ve seen tutorials for swapping out the HD for SSD but it required some other stuff.

I’ve been wanting to “fix” my Shield this way since I got it.

It was extremely easy to swap out the SSHD with an SSD in my 2015 Shield TV PRO. The SSD needed to be 500GB (other sizes can’t be cloned with this method). I was able to easily google the directions. Basically you use a screwdriver to pry open the case. Unscrew a few screws for the old SSHD, remove some tape and VERY CAREFULLY remove the SATA connector to the drive (it was taped onto my drive). I used an Inatek FD2002 cloner that I bought for about $35 and a Samsung Evo SSD like @paulblueskies did. Don’t connect the cloner to a PC or Mac, just place both drives into the appropriate slots, press the button like once or twice and wait 20 minutes to 2 hours (read the cloner’s directions). Once done just put the Shield TV back together with the new SSD and connect back to your TV. Turn on the Shield TV and it will be much faster booting up and starting apps.

After that you may even want to use the old SSHD as storage of your old videos or keep as a Shield TV backup or whatever else.

In addition, I moved a bunch of game roms off of my 2TB external drive and placed them directly onto the new internal storage.

But still, this is a hefty investment. I only did this because I already owned a Shield TV Pro that I was able to get on Ebay for $200 (instead of $300).
