Win10 Storage Spaces Issue

Hello, couldnt think of a better place to start asking about this. If there are other sites that you guys think can help me please let me know. So my problem is as follows.

I have a storage space on my plex server where i keep all my media. One drive on this storage space has failed. It makes clicking noises.
Storage spaces is refusing to remove the drive, it keeps trying to copy the data on it to empty spaces on the storage spaces but the drive not being accessible it just sits there locked up.
Its a simple JOB where i simply have the drives as one big pool.
Disappointed in the fact storage spaces really doesnt fail gracefully. Anyway to force the removal of this drive? If you guys need more info let me know. I have tried alot of commands in powershell with no luck based on my google searches/researching.

Have you asked MS or checked with the MS support sites. This really isn’t a plex server issue and as such many here will have limited experience with it.

I know its not a plex issue. but would be surprised if i am the first plex using to come across it.
Not sure which MS support site would be best to post on for an issue like this. Other than technet any other good ones?

Technet is exactly where I would suggest you go. My point is there is a much larger chance of someone there being able to help you instead of here. I suspect the population that uses storage spaces isn’t that great here. The discussions around disk protection technologies kind of indicate that.

I can’t think of anyone using storage solution. Spiceworks and Experts Exchange might return some hits, but they tend to be geared more towards IT professionals.

yajinni since it has hardware failed have you disconnected it and replaced it with another drive?
You shouldn’t be able to remove it since it’s required for striping.

I’d move away from SS as fast as possible as it’s not very good for large libraries.

You really couldn’t pick a worse solution

well at this point i have given up on recovering it. The only good solution i have found is ReclaiMe storage spaces recovery software. Anddd… thats 300 bucks. Not worth for what i have.I have decent backups else where so just going to wipe and start fresh. Didnt realse SS was such a bad solution. I am open to hearing what others have to say or use though. Might make another tread for that…

Storage Spaces, like many other pet solutions by people who have yet to have to deal with a real hardware failure, give a false sense of security.

Real RAID, with 2+ drives’ worth of redundancy, or don’t bother.

PLUS 3 copies.

Original
On site backup
Off site backup…

obviously.

Well the amount of backup if any is up to the op. Some people don’t care if they lost stuff since it’s not like a business/company network where your lively hood is tied to it.

Some people don’t backup at all and some people will just use RAID or a parity drive or two with something like SnapRaid and call it a day.

My original disc media is my “backup”, as my NAS isn’t used for anything but Plex. If my whole house burns down, I have bigger issues to deal with.

To be honest SW “restore” software are mostly a scam, very few of them work as inteded, yes it might restore an deleted file, buy physical damage you need to send it in to the pros.

as for me the could is my backup. and as said before if my home burns down I have other issues to deal with prior to worrying about plex

I just use mergerfs (ok, not Win but Linux) with 6 5Tb external drives split into two 15Tb ‘pools’. I then mirror the two with rsync. Nothing special and if a drive fails there’s nothing proprietary going on just swap it out and rsync back. Also use rclone to backup ACD (soon to swap to GDrive) and also use on Plex Cloud.
