Windows laptop using iGPU (GPU 0) instead of Nvidia GPU (GPU 1)

Hello,

I’m hoping to get an answer on this forum for this issue since I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere online.

I have a NAS where the Plex server is installed. My Windows laptop has an onboard GPU but also an Nvidia GPU. My laptop screen is always closed since I use a docking station and have two monitors connected to it. I have Plex for Windows installed and use it to play media off the NAS.

Whenever I play anything, it uses the iGPU instead of the Nvidia GPU as confirmed by the Task Manager where it shows Plex is using GPU 0 instead of GPU 1. The issue is that the iGPU doesn’t handle some media files well (4k for example) and plays them very choppy so I’m hoping for Plex for Windows to use the Nvidia GPU.

I tried going through Nvidia Control Panel and other settings, but nothing seems to make a difference.

I also have Video Playback Quality set to Normal, and it’s okay for most contents, but for some it’s annoying to watch and I want to avoid switching to Low Quality. I’d prefer to have Plex use the Nvidia GPU so I can switch the quality setting to High/Maximum/Ultra/Hurt my CPU, but it’s really bad when I use one of those settings with the iGPU.

Is there a way for Plex for Windows to use Nvidia GPU (GPU 1) instead of iGPU (GPU 0)? If so, I would love to know how to accomplish this.

Thanks!

So I forgot to mention I already tried this, but I had Plex already in that list of apps and I was trying to change the setting for the already existing Plex in that list. To try something different, I browsed and added Plex.exe manually to that list and noticed it added a new entry for Plex, so now I had two Plex entries showing in that list. I set the newly added Plex to High Performance (Nvidia GPU) and noticed it’s actually using the Nvidia GPU now. Thanks @OttoKerner !
