Windows Media Center WTV renamer

I know there are several other options out there to rename wtv files, but most require installing python or powershell.  This is just a simple exe (and dll) that you place in your recorded tv folder and run it.  It will attempt to rename your wtv files so that plex will be able to match them.  I personally set it up to run as a scheduled task every 30 minutes during primetime.  I was hoping to one day set it up to watch the folder, but I think it is sufficient as is.  I've been using this for about a year and it works well for the content I watch.  There are occasional issues when multiple episodes air on the same day and one will not get renamed.  Hope this helps someone.

Just extract the zip and put the exe and dll in your recorded tv folder.  Run the exe manually or set it up as a windows scheduled task.  Point your plex library to your recorded tv folder and it will now be able to download the meta data after the wtv files have been renamed.  Windows media center will still be able to play them as well.

Excuse my potential ignorance here, but I don’t see where to actually download the zip…

Thanks!

Sorry to be a pest here, but this solution is exactly what I am looking for to make Plex a viable remote-view app for my Windows Media a Center recorded TV shows… But I can’t seem to find where the actual zip file is that you refer to in your post. Can you help? Thanks…

Here’s a link to the zip https://www.dropbox.com/s/tjgoa9opdh764il/wtvrename.zip?dl=0

Thanks! I got it. However, when I put both the exe and dll in my recorded tv folder and run the exe, nothing seems to happen… no file names change, and I don’t see anything happening at all. Any suggestions?

Nevermind… guess it just needed some time… just impatient I guess. Except for a few specific shows (Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer christmas special being one example) this did the trick! Thanks very much for the work!

This response is two sided. First I think this is an awesome tool, but I have found a big problem, but help me to understand if I missed something.

In several cases I have found that the episode number does not match correctly. Interestingly when I sort by filename (i.e. production date) after processing, if the episode number is not correct, it is usually in chronological order. e.g. if ep 5 was change to 7, then 6 to 8 and 7 to 9 and so on.

It appears to me, without seeing the source, that when the program encounters an error and skips a particular file, the episode number is not indexed properly. Either that or maybe it’s based on a different country.

Could you tell me where this program fetches it’s information? I’ve run it on many files, and I had to correct about half, but if it worked flawlessly, that would be awesome. I’ve already destroyed the evidence (i.e. corrected the files myself), but let me know if there’s anything I can clarify.

Thanks,

Ok, so I found a folder I have not yet cleaned up. I attached a jpg of the folder contents and the log for comparison, but not a before and after. If you note, according to:

The lost commanders is S02E03 (+2)
Relics… is S02E04 (+2)
Wings… is S02E07 (+2)
Stealth… is S02E09 (+2)
Legacy… is S02E11 (+2)

Very interesting that all of the errors are incremented by 2.

Ok, so I went to theTVDB.com and found my answer. Looks like everything lines up. Just wish I understood why there are differences between the sources.

I just downloaded and tried to run this on Windows 8.1. At first, the log was saying that 0 files were processed, so I checked the compatibility troubleshooter. It had to be run in Windows 8 compatibility mode in order to process my .wtv files.

Hi All,

I know it’s been 4 years since this was posted - I’m wondering if this application still works?

I downloaded the ZIP file from the Dropbox link, but when running the log says for all files “Episode Not Found”.

I’m assuming this is because theTVDB changed their website?

Thanks,
Jeff.

timtlm - this is the fastest most efficient renamer that I have found that makes the lease errors. Is it possible to maybe release an uddated version that adds episode title at the end?

So “Series Title - SXXEXX - Episode Title”

that would really than make it useful with all the other scripts I have for organizing without having to scrape tVDB again.
