With Synology NAS, moving from version 6 to 7.2 on new NAS, will Plex work properly afterwards?

I read something about using a different IP address for the new NAS? I have static IP for my current NAS and there’s various settings with it, Sonos zones and so forth. I can’t imagine this would be necessary but thought I should ask.

I plan to use the existing DS720+ as a Hyper Backup vault but that’s for down the road after migrating.

Thanks.

Every device on your LAN must have a different IP address.

On my LAN, I group them; .20, .21, .22, .23., … .27 with static addresses

When they first started up, they were given a random DHCP address assigned by the router.

All I needed to do was change the network settings to Static, assign the IP address, type in the netmask again and type in the gateway IP address (modem/router) again.

When I hit Apply, it moved to that new address. With that done, I opened it via the new IP and created a bookmark. Done

My Synology has a static IP currently. Also shows the MAC address when I logged into my router. I have many devices with static IPs. With the new NAS, will it (can it) pick up the static IP for my current NAS or will I need to change that?

With a new NAS, I don’t know how it picks up the IP (whether it does a new one or gets the one on the former NAS because I’m just migrating the same drives over).

I should be good hopefully?

I stopped the Plex Media Server on my Synology and then did a Hyoer backup of the PMS shared folder. Did it to the external SSD drive.

I think I was to do this before migrating but maybe I got my notes mixed up?

BTW, I looked to do this earlier today but I am not finding the “compress to Library.zip” option. Here is what I’m seeing.

Plex Media Server, right-click options

Can you please let me know what I’m doing wrong?

Are you 100% certain your username has R/W/Admin privilege for the Plex shared folder ?

I’m not certain but it doesn’t look like it does. Here is the Plex shared folder and the permissions tab. Under my username, nothing is checked in the read/write column but it does show Read/Write under Group permissions column. Would this be why I’m not able to do the zip file when I followed your instructions?

If I go to Plex folder in File Library and right-click, and properties and look, here is what I see:

My username isn’t even showing. It should be shouldn’t it? How do I get it to be? If I highlight “admin” and then edit, the Administration boxes are unchecked. Should I check those boxes? (I’m not sure what the difference is between admin and administrators in this capture below).

If I click Advanced permissions tab, I see this:

I have another question related to the Shared folder. I checked a couple of other shared folders (which are related to Hyper backup - i.e. “Plex USB SSD 500GB”) and when I click Edit and then Permissions, there is no checkbox on Plex, but it does show Admin and bubbascant with Read/Write. Should I do the “Customize” for Plex on any Hyper backup that I have created? And get Full Control on Admin and bubbascat? And how do I get full control on Admin and my username? Wouldn’t it be that by default as it was part of setting up my NAS to begin with?

I have several Plex Hyper backups and also Music folder. What I’m confused by is why some backups show Owner as “Admin” and the others as “bubbascant”? Those with bubbascant as owner are older, meaning I created the backup quite a while ago. The ones with Admin as owner are recent, as in the past week or so. Why would this be?

Further confusing me now is that I have one I created only a few days ago and it says shared folder is usbshare1. I’m assuming this is because I didn’t change the name when I set it up?

Man, I really appreciate you for making sure of how I have things set up.

I was going to delete several of the Hyper backups as it is a bit redundant as I have several Plex ones for example. I only need one probably.

Please let me know. THANKS

  1. You don’t need to customize any permissions other than you having administrative privilege (being in the administrators group – which Synology should have already done for you)

  2. usbshare1 is the default name of an external USB HDD/SSD drive

  3. On this pge:

– Give yourself “Administrative” privilege.

I’m not sure but I hope so. I wonder how I can check? I suppose I can call them and ask tomorrow. Let me know if you’re aware.

I had a call with Synology today having to do with something else but I did ask the guy about whether the screen (permission Editor) for admin and/or administrators should have those boxes checked and he said it’s not necessary - but then he also says he’s not versed in Plex (his special area is Hyper backups).

He has cautioned on an earlier call a couple weeks ago about being very careful with permissions so I just have that ringing in my ear. That said, you know Plex and are a specialist. I can do as you suggest but should ask whether there’s anything doing so can do to affect Plex performance, Hyper backups and so forth. Sorry, I know I’m likely being over-the-top with this but I just want to make extra certain.

The other thing Synology guy told me today is that there were definitely issues (?) with Plex on Synology version 7, but that was at first so he thinks/believes the later updates (think it’s 7.2.1 right now) have solidified the marriage so to speak.

As always, thank you so very much. Your help has been just amazing.

On the screenshot you showed, which I showed again,

Check the “Administration” box, which grants all privileges, and SAVE/APPLY

Plex runs as a non-privileged user.
Hyperbackup runs as a privileged user so it doesn’t need any additional permissions assistance.

I assume doing so will help with Plex, especially when setting it back up on the new NAS after migration completes?

Sorry to be so cautious. Synology has just said to be very careful with permissions as it can wreak havoc. They weren’t specifically referencing Plex by the way.
