Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Question for the kind community here :slight_smile:
I have successfully updated my PMS to DSM 7 on my Synology NAS. Later on I bought a new Synology NAS and successfully install another PMS on DSM 7 so in Plex I can see both. How do I transfer all my metadata from the old NAS to the new one, both running version PlexMediaServer-1.24.1.4931-1a38e63c6-x86_64_DSM7? There is no \volume1\plex and restoring from a backup does not work.

TO ALL FOLLOWING HERE:

PMS 1.24.2.4973-2b1b51db9 and above will now contain the new ( :crossed_fingers: and final ) packaging changes.

If you’re using DSM 7 now, this upgrade / update is seamless. Let it do it’s thing.

No user intervention required
 only patience (it might take a few minutes depending on your NAS speed)

TO ALL FOLLOWING HERE:

In light of the problems being surfaced by all the crazy things out there,

I am writing a “DSM 7 Repair Script”.

It will prepair the “Plex” share for migration.

If my writing goes as planned,

  1. You run the script as ‘root’ in Scheduled tasks

  2. It will perform ALL the steps you would normally need do to migrate PMS from DSM 6 → DSM 7.

  3. At that point, you may then INSTALL the appropriate PMS version

I’d like to request a split here and have a quick discussion about running Plex in a docker container.

This thread has been really informative for the native app for DSM 7.

So I’ve read through all of the install instructions and all of this thread.

I did not see much about Docker.

I found this guys instructions on running Plex in Docker on DSM 7 and was relatively straightforward. Please ignore his comments about there not being a working version of Plex for DSM 7 now because after reading this thread there obviously is.

@ChuckPa We previously discussed the magic of interfacing with the Intel quicksync video on DSM 6 by using a nice little snippet of pre-launch code:

if [ ! -f /lib/udev/rules.d/60-fix-plex-hw-transcoding.rules ]; then
echo ‘SUBSYSTEM==“drm”, GROUP=“video”’ > /lib/udev/rules.d/60-fix-plex-hw-transcoding.rules
elif [ “grep -c drm /lib/udev/rules.d/60-fix-plex-hw-transcoding.rules” -eq 0 ]; then
echo ‘SUBSYSTEM==“drm”, GROUP=“video”’ > /lib/udev/rules.d/60-fix-plex-hw-transcoding.rules
fi

Are we still able to access that hardware in DSM 7?

Short question is
 “Will “edit
 HARDWARE “ transcoding work with DSM 7, and PMS running in a Docker container?”

I found my draft :wink:

NOT final version.

@ChuckPa

I have a question i have do a backup of my older plex folder when i was in dsm 6 If i start from scratch and il install the new server version 1.24.2.4973 now in dsm 7 can I take my backup from dsm 6 and transfer it to the new plexmediaserver folder to restore all my settings and metadata ?

Thank you

@Mick_83

If you take your old Backup (from DSM 6)

  1. Create the Plex shared folder

  2. Put everything back into the Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server structure

  3. Remove all of the DSM 7 application (Uninstall + Erase)

  4. Install PMS 1.24.2.4973

  5. It will migrate directly from your backup in the Plex shared folder → PlexMediaServer shared folder.

Check on the Synology - Just like you did when you initially set it up.

Hi ChuckPa. Hope this is the correct thread. Apologies if not.

Newbies here both to Plex and Synology DSM7

We’ve been running Synology DSM6 and Plex for a few months without issue. All Plex content accessible on local wifi network (Telstra Netgear v7610 modem), IOS devices (iphones / ipads) and remote access.

Upgraded to DSM7.0-41890 last weekend and encountered all the issues seen on the forum. Hadn’t uninstalled Plex 6 beforehand. Naively used the Synology hosted app. Problem
and trustingly used ‘Repair’ option and
worse still
downloaded from the Package Centre. Problem. Might have also had unclaimed server message at one point in the panic. So, then uninstalled Plex and downloaded from Plex site DSM7 version 1.24.4.5081-7000. Manual installed. Lost our libraries, recreated them from the Media folder and corrected all the PMS permissions in the Shared folders using System Internal User R/W or custom. Rebooted etc. The newly created PlexMediaServer contains AppData folder and everything from ‘cache to plug-ins’ so then deleted the old (empty) Plex shared folder. The media folder containing the movies, videos, photos etc, which the PMS connected to in rebuilding its libraries, is on a separate volume of the same NAS as it was with DSM6.

Streaming content to desktop mac running 11.6 (ethernet to NAS) was ok but no streaming to IOS devices or remote access. Content stalls. Plex messages received on IOS “your connection to the server is not fast enough to stream this video” and later “you are not connected directly to this server so streaming quality may be limited. You may be able to connect directly by changing your home network settings”. Checked the transcoder and quality settings on Plex and tried adjusting. No improvement. Deleted the IOS apps and re-downloaded from App Store. No change.

The network settings were ok prior to the DSM/Plex upgrades. Perhaps the new PMS automatically adjusted the network / modem settings? Checked the modem admin settings but unsure what might be now required for the new PMS? Tried setting LAN1 (ethernet) on the NAS to static IP. No change.

Running out of options. It may be the modem but unsure where to start. (Coincidentally, we have an old / unused Apple Network from a Time Capsule still active, it is connected by ethernet to the Netgear modem. If the IOS devices are switched to the Apple network streaming is instantaneous. If switched back to the Telstra network it stalls. Neither seem to be able to allow Remote Access. The Apple Network is set to Bridge Mode
the Netgear Modem doesn’t appear to have Bridge Mode but has NAT and Ipv6 activated for internet traffic and set to “Block all WAN incoming IPv6 traffic to LAN”. If changed to “Allow incoming IPv6 traffic per rules”
we’re unsure about the rules required. Lost when it comes to networks, ports and port forwarding etc). But it was all working without issue before the two recent upgrades to DSM7 and the new Plex Media Sever.

Sorry for the lengthy post but perhaps better more info initially than none. Any guidance appreciated.

May I ask you to capture an example of this failure for me?

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced.
    a. DEBUG logging option ON
    b. VERBOSE logging option OFF
    c. SAVE if you make any changes

  2. Now recreate the failure (only need up to 2 minutes of one)

  3. After the failure, Settings - Server - Troubleshooting - Download Logs

  4. It will give you a ZIP file. Please attach that ZIP file here

@Mad-Titan

I’m sorry – OFF TOPIC – Not related.

Ubuntu installation does not remotely resemble Synology.
Use of the power button on a Synology NAS can be fatal to the entire storage volume.
( I am the packaging engineer for Linux, Synology, QNAP, and several other NAS platforms )

Please create a separate thread tagged server-linux and I will be happy to help you with the problem.

No problem. My apologies. I think the post was misinterpreted. I pointed out the there seems to be a similar issue with the upgrade file for Ubuntu as well. I did not request help or guidance in the post. But I will, going forward just keep these things to myself.

Thank you for pointing this out for me.

Hi ChuckPa
we’ve had a couple of days of severe lightning storms and had to power down everything a couple of times, modem, synology NAS, local network and office network.

In re-setting it all up the PMS seems to have clicked back into place as it did originally. All working, local and remote at normal speeds. As always, ‘it just works’. If it slips again I’ll let you know.

Thanks for the help.

Buenas noches ChuckPa, llevo mas de 2 meses asi desde actualizé a DSM 7 y nada, si que es verdad que cuando desintalé Plex no le di a mantener, sino a borrar todo.
Ahora cual es la solucion?

Good night ChuckPa, I have been like this for more than 2 months since I updated to DSM 7 and nothing, if it is true that when I uninstalled Plex I did not give it to keep, but to delete everything.
Now what is the solution?

I need to know more information.

  1. You previously had a DSM 6 install running ?

  2. There were no problems when you upgraded to DSM 7?

  3. When you did upgrade to DSM 7, Did you click the ‘Repair’ button?

INFO: DSM 6 never deleted when it uninstalled. DSM 7 does not delete unless you instruct it to. Your data is there. We need to find it.

Hi, I downloaded the package from the website for my nas and I am getting always the same answer.

Already restarted and tried again, but same issue.

My nas is DS214play and I am using: aRMv7 for x14 series

I successfully installed Plex Media Server Version 1.24.4.5081 on my Synology NAS after I had upgraded to DSM 7 thanks to the kind and knowledgeable people on this thread. It is working quite well.

I was notified there is a new Plex Media Server called “Download”, available for installation. Now that I have Version 1.24.4.5081 up and running, will I have to go through all the steps I did to get Version 1.24.4.5081 running under DSM 7 or will it now install seamlessly like previous version did before I upgraded to DSM 7? Will all future versions of PMS be written for DSM 7? Thanks for your patience and help!

Now that you’ve made the one-time upgrade to DSM 7

all your future upgrades will be as they were before
