Upgrading synology NAS to new hardware and don't want plex shared users to have to add a new server

Plex Server Version 1.24.5.5173 & DSM 7

I am hosting plex off synology NAS that is outdated and I need to upgrade the hardware. I can copy the data over to the new NAS, but I want a seamless transition for my plex friends and users. Is there a way to set up the new NAS and point the plex at that new NAS instead of the old one?

thanks,

@CayceStone

Synology’s process of migrating (physically moving the entire RAID volume) from machine to machine (you move all the drives) works perfectly.

  1. Backup your DSM configuration (Control Panel - Backup & restore)
  2. Write down the list of installed apps. (you will need to reinstall but the data will all be kept)
  3. Physically move the drives to the new machine
  4. Start it up
  5. Using the Synology Assistant - Have it upgrade the version of DSM which exists on those drives to the DSM which matches the machine (it knows what to do)
  6. After DSM update is complete
  7. Open the DSM destkop
  8. If your shared folders aren’t listed (DSM is very good about keeping them) – Restore the old machine’s configuration
  9. Install your apps again

Upgrade from older hardware to new is now complete

The updated procedure from synology is here:

that sounds really helpful. Have you heard of this working with Plex and not causing a problem? I am worried that plex would need to have the users make changes.

thanks again,

That’s exactly why @ChuckPa posted that. The migration should be seamless with no issues if done correctly.

yall are amazing, this noob really appreciates you experts helping.

@CayceStone

I have 2 Synology NAS units here in my office and several more in the HQ lab.

The Synology procedure works flawlessly.

  1. Backup config
  2. Move drives
  3. Reinstall DSM using their Synology Assistant (Migrate DSM to a new NAS)
  4. Reload the apps
  5. Pour :wine_glass:
  6. :sunglasses:

PS: I know it works if Plex is already installed because Plex is “data” on the volume. The only thing you change is the binary package (dependent on the CPU in the NAS)

PSS: The important data to keep is inside Plex (the server ID numbers). If you preserve them, you can move from anything to anything ; which I’ve done on several occasions.

ChuckPa is pretty much the Plex GOAT in my eyes. Never steered me wrong and has mountains of knowledge.

Am I that ugly?

:flushed:

LOL

Who said GOATs are ugly?
:wink:
LOL

:man_facepalming:

:rofl:

where do I get the server ID numbers?

@CayceStone

The server ID numbers are maintained in the Preferences.xml file.

It’s best to not touch it unless given instructions.

If the procedures are followed, all the data is kept together as a unit and it just “works” as it should.

I just wanted to thank yall for the amazing help and confidence as I went through this process. it really means a lot to the noob like me to have experts that can help solve things.

@CayceStone

You got it all done without any show-stopping problems ?

worked like a charm, no issues.

Good thread! What should I do in my scenario:

I have (1) 6TB drive installed on my DS220+ that I want to replace with a 16TB Ironwolf that I have. How do I get everything (configurations etc.) to the 16TB with minimal interruption?

@CT9AJ

You want to do a single-disk swap ?

If that’s correct, it’s like pulling the HDD out of your computer, putting in a new one, and wanting to copy everything back. – Tricky but not impossible.

Yep! Pretty much what I’m looking to do, want the 16TB to be the primary drive going forward.

How much data is already on that 6TB ?

It’s only got like 600GB free at the moment.

I have Movies, TV Shows, Music (Only like 2 albums), various documents, Plex Media Server and my DSM System on this drive.
