Won't play 4K HDR videos?

Server Version#:1.42.2
Player Version#: Generic Smart TV Client

Trying to play a 4K HDR demo file Plex transcodes it down to 1080P :frowning:

Well play a normal 4K video without transcoding it? have I got a setting wrong somewhere?

Have a look at this support article (the Devices with Limited Playback Capabilities section) to see if it applies to your TV. I’d recommend reading the entire article as well, but this links directly to the relevant section:

…that’s… super informative.

AV1 codec with 4k and HDR is fairly sophisticated. Your client needs to support the decode natively. App and the HW.

AppleTV 4K can probably do that file if you pay for an Infuse subscription, but not if you use the official Plex app.

nVidia Shield is common, but it’s too old and jank for that kind of complexity.

Google TV Streamer 4K should work though.

Yea my 4year old, 2021 era iPad runs solid on the official app, don’t but don’t buy an ATV right now, it’s chips are much older and out of date, would probably croak.

Well my basic Plex for Smart TV would play a 4K video and stream it direct at 42mbs with no problem, it was just having an issuse with the (AV1) HDR10 type, my TV plays the file from a USB stick plugged in directly so yes it must be the limitations of the Plex App built into the TV, oh its a Panasonic OLED 2024 model year BTW. If I turn forced direct play off on the TV APP, then it tells Plex to transcode the file down to 1080P and plays fine, which is not what I wanted, I wanted to see the true quality of the 4K file. Oh, well need to try to remux this into a format it will handle. I tried OBS to remux the video file, but I lost the sound!!! FFS!
