I've just done a test, encoding an NTSC 16:9 DVD as square pixel widescreen (854x480). Plex handles it just fine, but it's not a long-term solution; encoding non-anamorphically takes 1.5x the storage and twice the time. Not to mention the diminished quality returns of re-encoding all those files that are already h.264...
Yes, the issue does appear to be related to anamorphic content. As noted previously, this is definitely already known/tracked and being worked on. Sorry for the trouble!
Disappointed that this was not fixed in the latest update.
I dont have this Problem and i use the latest update too.
But here in Europe we dont use 480p.
I can confirm that I’m still seeing this problem after the August 18th Xbox update too. Will try to find some time to provide XML/sample data for you guys.
I see this on the TiVo app as well.
Had this problem and came on here looking for a fix… After no luck I fiddled and found something that works…
On the 360 app while a video was playing change the QUALITY setting to 720kbs 480p and it fills the screen…
Any setting higher than the actual resolution of the video file including Maximum puts the black borders around the video.
Not an actual fix I guess but it works so I am happy.
Any updates on this issue? While the work around from CessBB is only mildly annoying, it would be nice to not have to bother with it, especially when as far as I’ve seen there is no global quality setting.
So, I’ve recently started having this problem too. Looks like the problem has been around for more than 2 years. I guess that means that Plex has no plan to fix it
