Xbox one new app is trash!

Got home from work tonight, and was excited to see an update for the Plex app. The excitement died when I tried to use it.

Major Usability Problems:

  • Breathing on the controller too hard makes whatever you are watching skip. Apparently someone felt that every knob and button should be used for the skip feature. It used to be the d-pad was what was used to skip. Absolutely NO other Xbox app does this. This is terrible - FIX IT
  • MKV seems to not play so nicely as it did before. It seems that the old problems that used to be with MKV (and the reason I did not use Plex) are back. - Skipping makes the thing freeze and lock up randomly. - See problem #1 with controller making it skip
  • In settings, it says my device is 1280 x 720 - WRONG! I double checked every setting on my system to make sure that somehow I did not have something set up correctly. For some reason, Plex is operating at 720p instead of 1080p (or higher I suppose)
  • ALL of my folders are GONE! - All I get now are Movies, Shows, Music, Videos… Apparently someone thought that no one uses folders to store and sort their content!!!

Annoyances:

  • The app would not connect to my local server from the get go. (Which has never been a problem) It kept saying the server was unreachable. I had to go into settings and manually enter the IP address - which made it work.
  • Coloring is blah - The former black background allowed the content (posters, still shots, etc) be the star of the content. Now everything just gets washed out.
  • Navigation is very clunky. One obvious example: click on shows - hit the B button to go back home (like every other xbox app) nope! It asks if you want to quit Plex.
  • UI needs significant repairs to make it the professional caliber app that it was just yesterday. It looks and functions like it was delegated to a high school intern to put together.

Fun things:
My dog loves the plex logo screensaver. He stares at the screen barking at it.

Plex, you have taken a rock solid app and gutted it on so many levels. Honestly, I would rename this version ā€œPlex Xbox Alphaā€ and put the old version back in the store till you can get some of these major issues worked out.

@EnigmaFX What about the web app? Does it persist after you force close the app and restart it?

web client is fine as well mate

I made an update video now that i understand the issue a bit more, you can send it off to whom ever you think in order to get a better idea as to what is going on if it helps —> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D63tyUocwVY&feature=youtu.be

@Moussa Why is my Device-Screen-Resolution set to 1280x720 when I’m using my Xbox one, which is native 1080p, on a 4K LG set?

Please roll back this update.

Interface is as far away from intuitive as one could get. It makes the XBOX built in media server app look like a walk in the park to use.

Issues:

  1. Took quite a while to figure out how to select a server (why up off the screen? not obvious like the old system)
  2. Controls, why are the direction pads active? cant set the controller down with out skipping though by accident
  3. TERRIBLE time updating, had to manually uninstall and re-install twice to get it up and going with out constant crashes
  4. Sporadic crashes
  5. Video playback not as smooth
  6. Logo screensaver seems to prevent my tv from entering low power mode

The good:
The control menu has setting in it, however changing these isnt a dynamic change, so almost no point vs the old method of exiting.

The best i can hope for is a reversion of the app to its former version.

@EnigmaFX That’s a very odd issue, can’t say I’ve seen it reported before. If possible, would you mind temporarily sharing your affected library with me so I can see if I can diagnose on my end?

@KeiffG That’s only the UI resolution, media is played back at the native resolution.

@telemorphics Sorry you’re having issues. You can disable the screensaver in the app settings (under the user menu).

I can also confirm 100% that it is not a server update issue and specifically an issue caused by the client as I have plex cloud set up for a few things it happens to those as well I can share that with you no problem, your username is " Moussa " correct?

@EnigmaFX That’s right.

sent sorry canceled first one by mistake*

Oh lord, this update is horrible. It’s ugly, non-intuitive and clunky. The up arrow to find the libraries was cut off on our screen, so it took us 15 minutes to find it and figure out how to scroll through the server libraries. I definitely preferred to have the libraries listed on the side, so I could see them easily. Just…yuck.

Edit to my earlier post: it occurred to me to try an experiment… I got one of my older controllers that has a slight thumb stick drift out. (Very common xbox controller issue) I launched a video and it immediately starts skipping.

I suppose this may be a reason media apps do not use thumb sticks for media control.

So basically if you are not a heavy gamer that regularly replaces their controllers then the plex app will no longer work for you once one of the thumb sticks develops an inevitable drift…

Where are my channels?!

This has to be the worst update ever, why even change it it was fine before. Clearly you guys fucked up as seen by the outcry of users to please roll back this update. Poor design, suck up the pride whoever changed this and change it back.

plexrafter: I can also confirm the issue on screens that have an overscan. I hooked up my no name cheap tv from the bedroom to the Xbox and you can not see the navigation elements at the top of the screen.

Pros:
Can now search for content on xbox. Yay!

Cons: Everything else.
Layout sucks, backgrounds suck, difficult to find things. Overscan on my Mitsubishi 82" DLP makes it difficult to even see the HOME icon. Vastly unnecessary changes for what appear to be the sake of changes, and poorly implemented. Not intuitive at all, couldn’t figure out initially how to change what library I was even in, less movies fit on screen now than before when it was horizontal, so it seems to take longer to scroll/go through them. Not intuitive to find my playlists.

I didn’t read all of this but I have agree I hate it plus it broke my 4k video streaming. Older version played my 4k movie at 60.8mbps over lan no problem. New one stuttered and crashed before 2min mark. It’s horrible!

What I’m even more pissed about is I’m being forced now to use it with an update on the older version as I installed both separately to try it. Now I can’t watch certain movies with this forced update because of the transcoding dibacle this ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  update caused.

I just tested other movies with this new updated version it’s a damn clusterfk and I’m canceling my plex pass and finding something else to use. This is pure and utter BS! You guys really screwed this app up big time. I have a way overpowered machine running this too I never had issues with the older version of the app.

I have to strongly echo the general sentiment. This has to be the biggest misstep in an application update that I’ve seen in many, many years. I initially attempted to list all of the things that are just plain wrong with this update, but I quickly realized it would make much more sense to list what’s right vs. wrong. I think I can summarize that quite concisely by simply saying: thanks for adding search. Everything else: not so much.

Everyone in my household hates this update. Way more clicks to get to our various tv and movie libraries. They were perfectly listed on the left before the update, now i have to go searching for them. I don’t want all of my tv/movie libraries grouped like this - it makes no sense. Please, please roll us back.

Hi there.

I have 2 tv libraries, one for dvr recordings and one for other shows

What exactly is the issue here. You can access your TV libraries by navigating up from the top navigation bar on the dashboard to switch between them.

That’s far more work, and much less discoverable than before.
